The Favorites
Saquon Barkley, RB, Philadelphia Eagles (+550): Last year, Saquon Barkley became the second straight running back to win OPOY, and you couldn’t really argue with his selection. If positions were weighed evenly, he probably would have won MVP too. Six RBs have won the award since 2010, which is tied with QB for the most for any position.
There have only ever been seven multi-time winners of this award, four of which were running backs. Two of those actually won it three years running: Marshall Faulk 1999-2001 and Earl Campbell 1978-1980. Barkley could very well run it back too. The offensive line remains intact, and Barkley is still in his prime at 28 years old. He’s a great shout here as a favorite on very enticing +550 odds.
Ja’Marr Chase, WR, Cincinnati Bengals (+900): The reigning receiving triple crown winner will have a tough time topping what he did last year. He’s getting paid more, but not much else about the Bengals’ offense has changed. Same great QB, same awful offensive line. Three of the last six OPOY winners have been WRs, but no wideouts won between 1994-2018.
To win, Chase will have to either win the triple crown (again) like Cooper Kupp did in 2021, break a single-season record like Michael Thomas did in 2019, or put up 1,800+ and 125+ receptions like his buddy Justin Jefferson did in 2022. It’s a tall order.
Jahmyr Gibbs, RB, Detroit Lions (+1,100): Even though his partner in crime David Montgomery remains in Detroit with him, we think Jahmyr Gibbs is going to slowly but surely edge the older plodder out of the backfield rotation this season. Gibbs is simply too good to leave on the bench for half of the game. He’s also a true dual threat back, which allows him to contribute even more. At +1,100 odds on most sports betting sites, the value is there for Gibbs in this market and he is our favorite bet on the board behind Barkley.
Long Shot Value Bets
- Amon-Ra St. Brown, WR, Detroit Lions (+2,000): The possession receiver has added a lot of touchdowns to his game in recent years, and that should help round out his candidacy here. His career trajectory is still pointing up and we think the Lions will be great once again.
- Christian McCaffrey, RB, San Francisco 49ers (+2,000): He won two years ago, and we think he has a great chance of bouncing back from an injury-plagued (but also, pretty restful) 2024. Not to mention the 49ers have fewer weapons, which means CMC will be more impactful.
- Lamar Jackson, QB, Baltimore Ravens (+2,800): QBs won this award in eight of 12 years from 2007-2018, but they have not won since Patrick Mahomes did in 2018. Lamar Jackson was shafted during awards season last year, and he’s likely to put up similar numbers again. We doubt he finishes the year without some hardware for a second straight year.
