The American League-best Detroit Tigers will be looking to keep it rolling on Sunday, June 28, when they face the Minnesota Twins in the rubber match of a three-game set. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM ET. Detroit won Saturday’s contest 10-5 behind a massive performance from their offense, with several players collecting multiple hits. Twins vs Tigers Analysis
It’s been a rather disappointing campaign for the Twins in an AL Central division that is typically wide open. Minnesota is sitting at 40-43, a whole 11.5 games back of the Tigers, who are comfortably in first place. The Twins aren’t shining in any particular area, sitting 16th in runs scored, 22nd in average, and 22nd in hits. On the hill, they’ve struggled, pitching to a 4.14 ERA. That ranks 21st in the Majors. Minny heads into the finale of this crucial divisional series with a 4-6 record in their last 10 contests.
Rocco Baldelli will be hoping Paddack can give his club a chance to win on Sunday. The right-hander, who broke onto the scene with the San Diego Padres a few years back, has gone 3-6 this season with a 4.64 ERA in 16 starts. He’s struck out 60 in 85.1 innings of work while walking 24. Paddack already faced the Tigers earlier in the campaign, holding them to one earned run across five frames. However, his ERA is substantially higher on the road, sitting at 5.48. He’s given up 12 earned runs across his last two road appearances.
The Tigers showed last year in the postseason they’re for real. While this young group didn’t make a deep run, the promise was there and it appears Detroit has truly arrived. Their 52-32 record is the best in the American League and they’ve showed no signs of slowing down. AJ Hinch’s squad is top 10 in almost every major category, ranking fifth in runs scored, 10th in average, eighth in hits, ninth in home runs, and seventh in ERA. Their rotation has been relatively consistent, led by Skubal and Casey Mize, who both have ERAs well under three.
Skubal looks like a lock to win another AL Cy Young award. The left-hander is easily one of the best at his craft in the sport, posting a 9-2 record and 2.29 ERA. He also has a stellar 0.87 WHIP. Skubal has struck out 125 in 102 innings of work and walked just 13 batters. His command is absolutely phenomenal and he’s held opponents to a mere .205 average. The lefty is coming off his worst start of the year however, allowing four runs to the Athletics in six innings. This Twins lineup is batting just .125 off Skubal across 84 at-batrs.
Twins vs Tigers Picks
It’s rare for the Tigers to lose when Skubal is on the bump. He also has a 2.30 ERA at Comerica Park. After a poor outing to his standards last time out, I expect the reigning Cy Young winner to come out and put together a lights out performance against the Twins. Take Detroit to win the series finale at home.
