Canada’s online gambling industry is entering a pivotal stretch as the 2026 NFL season gains momentum and the new Alberta sports betting and online casino market continues to grow. Alberta opened its market on July 13, with the government previously estimating that unregulated operators captured approximately 70% of the province’s iGaming activity.
The Alberta iGaming Corporation’s first market report recorded C$56.6 million in non-adjusted gross gaming revenue in September, up from C$43.3 million in August. Sports and event betting generated 19.5% of September’s total, with separate industry reporting showing category revenue more than doubled month over month as the NFL season began. The report does not isolate NFL betting, but the timing highlights football’s importance as regulated operators compete for customers.
Now, BetMGM has renewed its Canadian partnership with the National Football League (NFL) for another year, extending the agreement to cover Alberta alongside Ontario. Announced on October 22, the deal gives the sportsbook a stronger platform to promote its brand in a newly opened market during one of the most commercially important periods on the NFL calendar.
Highlights
- BetMGM has renewed its Canadian partnership with the NFL, extending the agreement to include Alberta alongside Ontario.
- The deal gives BetMGM continued access to NFL branding and marketing opportunities as sportsbooks compete during the 2026 season.
- Alberta’s growing regulated iGaming market offers new opportunities for BetMGM, but operators must balance customer acquisition with responsible gambling and player protection.
BetMGM renews NFL partnership and adds Alberta
Under the renewed agreement, BetMGM will remain an Official Sports Betting Partner of the NFL in Canada, with coverage spanning digital and retail channels in Ontario and Alberta. The one-year extension builds on a partnership that began in August 2022, just months after Ontario launched its commercial online gambling market. The original agreement established BetMGM's rights to use official NFL intellectual property in Canada, including league and team marks, and advertise across NFL-operated digital platforms.
The renewed arrangement preserves those benefits while opening the door to additional marketing activations and premium hospitality experiences. BetMGM can continue incorporating the NFL shield, team branding and marquee events such as the Super Bowl into its Canadian marketing campaigns. Neither party disclosed the financial terms of the extension.
The Alberta addition is particularly significant because BetMGM was among the operators that launched in the province on July 13, the first day of its regulated market. The agreement therefore gives the company NFL-related marketing rights in a province where private sportsbooks are still establishing their brands and competing to attract players.
Who is BetMGM, and what does it offer NFL bettors?
BetMGM is a sports betting and online gaming operator jointly owned by MGM Resorts International and Entain. Founded in 2018, the company combines MGM's hospitality and casino heritage with Entain's online betting technology. It entered Ontario in April 2022 and expanded into Alberta in July 2026, making the province its first international market expansion since entering Ontario, according to the company's Alberta launch announcement.
Its NFL offering is built around a broad selection of betting markets. According to the renewed partnership announcement, customers in Ontario and Alberta can access more than 500 markets for every NFL game, including anytime touchdown scorer wagers and live betting options. Expanded Cash Out features also allow eligible customers to settle bets before a game's final result. The partnership can help BetMGM market these products around the league's most recognizable moments. That matters when bettors are choosing between multiple regulated apps offering overlapping markets, odds and sports betting bonuses.
Official league status offers a distinction beyond the sportsbook's product itself. The ability to use NFL trademarks and team logos in approved campaigns, combined with access to league-related activations and hospitality experiences, gives BetMGM additional ways to reach football fans and build brand recognition.
Alberta's new market creates a timely opportunity
Alberta's regulated iGaming market has expanded rapidly since its summer launch. The AiGC's first report found that the number of operators grew from 15 at launch to 24 by September 30. Total non-adjusted gross gaming revenue reached C$122.1 million over the reporting period, while September alone generated C$56.6 million. Sports and event betting accounted for 19.5% of September's total, behind casino gaming at 75.6%. Separate reporting on the market figures put sports betting revenue at approximately C$11.1 million in September, up from C$5.2 million in August.
The NFL's return provides sportsbooks with a regular stream of high-profile events, from Sunday matchups to prime-time games and the eventual playoff race. The figures do not establish how much of Alberta's growth came from football, but they show that sports betting is gaining traction as the province's regulated market develops. An NFL partnership cannot guarantee that all of those football fans will switch to BetMGM. It can, however, make a regulated operator more visible and recognisable as consumers reassess their options.
For now, the renewed NFL partnership gives BetMGM a stronger marketing position at a consequential moment. Alberta's market is growing, competitors are securing league relationships, and the NFL season offers a weekly opportunity to reach engaged fans.
