Ontario's iGaming market has entered a new phase in 2026. The province remains Canada's most competitive regulated online gambling jurisdiction, while Alberta has now joined the private-operator model, officially opening its own regulated market on July 13. That has created a fresh battleground for sportsbook and casino brands looking to establish themselves with Canadian players.

Meanwhile, the Ontario sports betting and casino market is the one everyone wants a piece of. The province's regulated sector has grown into a massive business, with casino games consistently accounting for the lion's share of wagering activity. In one recent quarterly report, operators recorded $22.7 billion in wagers and $825.8 million in gaming revenue, while casino products represented 83% of wagers and 78% of revenue. That makes the latest development particularly significant: Hard Rock Bet is finally in Ontario.

Hard Rock Bet (finally) goes live in Ontario

Hard Rock Digital announced Wednesday, July 22, that its Hard Rock Bet sportsbook and online casino are officially live in the province, marking the company's first international market and its first expansion outside the United States. For Ontario's crowded iGaming industry, the arrival is more than another operator joining the party. It brings one of the world's most recognizable casino and entertainment brands into a market where it has had an unusually large physical and corporate footprint for years.

Hard Rock Bet arrives with both sides of the online gambling equation. Ontario customers can access a full sportsbook alongside more than 3,000 online casino games, including slots, table games and live dealer titles. The platform also includes Hard Rock's loyalty ecosystem, with players able to earn Unity Points and access other sports betting bonuses and digital rewards through the Hard Rock Bet Reward Store.

That makes Ontario just the third real-money market where Hard Rock Bet offers both sports betting and online casino, following Michigan and New Jersey. The company has already established its sportsbook in 10 U.S. states, making the Ontario launch a significant step beyond its domestic expansion strategy.

The timing is also notable. Hard Rock Bet's absence from Ontario had become increasingly difficult to explain. Major U.S. brands including FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM and Caesars have already carved out positions in the province, while other major operators such as bet365 and BetRivers have been competing for the same customers. Hard Rock, meanwhile, had the brand recognition, the gaming pedigree and a physical Canadian presence that made its absence stand out.

The company has operated a Toronto office for years, with roughly 200 employees in Ontario across Hard Rock Digital's regional operations and its Hard Rock Games social gaming division. Hard Rock International also has a major land-based presence in Canada through Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Ottawa, which opened in July 2025.  In other words, Hard Rock was already in Ontario. It just wasn't in the part of the gambling market growing fastest.

What does this mean and what’s next for Ontario players

Hard Rock Bet is entering a market where brand recognition will help, but it won't guarantee success. Ontario's operators have spent years building customer databases, partnerships and loyalty programs. Hard Rock will have to convince players to add to their growing list of betting apps, move money into another account and give its sportsbook and casino products a chance.

That is why the company's promise to build a "truly local presence" could matter. CEO Marlon Goldstein said Hard Rock is investing in local talent, partnerships and customer support, with a consumer-focused marketing campaign expected to roll out in the coming weeks. The company's existing Ontario workforce and Ottawa casino give it something many new entrants simply don't have: a foundation already planted in the market.

The longer-term implications could be even bigger. Ontario's launch gives Hard Rock Digital a working blueprint for international expansion. If the company can establish itself in one of North America's most competitive iGaming markets, Ontario could become a testing ground for future expansion beyond the U.S. It also puts Hard Rock in a stronger position to capitalize on the growing convergence between land-based casinos, online gambling and loyalty programs.

The competitive impact should not be overstated. Hard Rock isn't likely to instantly reshape Ontario's market. But it does add another major global brand to an already crowded field, increasing pressure on established operators to differentiate through product depth, promotions, partnerships and customer experience. And for Ontario players, the message is simple: the market keeps getting bigger, and the competition for their attention is getting fiercer.
