Alberta’s regulated iGaming market is barely two weeks old, but the competitive landscape is already changing quickly. The province opened its doors to private online gambling operators on July 13, giving residents access to a new wave of Alberta sportsbooks and online casinos alongside the existing PlayAlberta platform. On launch day, 22 licensed consumer-facing sites went live, while AGLC’s broader framework requires approved operators to register with the regulator and sign commercial agreements with the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC).
That launch was already a major shift for Alberta. The province had long been home to a large grey-market online gambling ecosystem, with AiGC saying roughly 70% of online gambling activity had previously taken place through unregulated offshore betting sites. The new system is designed to pull that activity into a regulated environment built around player protection, responsible gambling, security and provincial oversight.
Now, the market is getting another jolt. On Thursday, July 23, Entain officially brought Sports Interaction and PartyCasino into Alberta’s regulated market.
Highlights
- Entain has officially transitioned Sports Interaction and PartyCasino into Alberta's regulated iGaming market, adding two established brands to the province's rapidly expanding operator lineup.
- The move gives Entain three brands in Alberta alongside BetMGM, strengthening its position as competition intensifies following the market's July 13 launch.
- Sports Interaction and PartyCasino's arrival highlights the broader shift from Alberta's grey-market gambling environment toward a regulated system focused on competition, player protection and responsible gaming.
What is Entain and why is this move significant?
Entain is a global sports betting and gaming company behind a sprawling portfolio of brands, including bwin, PartyCasino, partypoker and Sports Interaction. It also operates BetMGM through its 50/50 joint venture with MGM Resorts International. In Canada, however, the company has increasingly leaned into a strategy that combines global technology and scale with brands that already have deep local recognition.
Sports Interaction is the clearest example. The Canadian brand dates back to 1997 and built a significant presence in the country's sports betting market long before Alberta opened its regulated framework. Entain acquired its parent company, Avid Gaming, for C$300 million in 2022. At the time, Entain described Sports Interaction as one of Canada's leading online sports betting brands and highlighted the value of combining its global technology with Sports Interaction's local expertise and partnerships.
That acquisition also carried an important Canadian connection. Avid Gaming exclusively licensed the Sports Interaction trademark and provided betting and gaming products and services to Mohawk Online, the socioeconomic initiative owned by the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke. Entain said revenues from Mohawk Online support community priorities including cultural and language programs, schools, healthcare and public services.
Sports Interaction subsequently secured an Ontario iGaming licence, joining Entain's other licensed Canadian brands, including PartyCasino, bwin and BetMGM. Today, iGaming Ontario lists Sports Interaction and PartyCasino among its regulated offerings.
The move is significant because these aren't new names trying to crack Alberta for the first time. Both brands have operated for years in Canada, while Sports Interaction had already been serving Albertans before regulation. Their transition means Entain now has three major brands active in Alberta, following the launch of BetMGM on opening day. The company's Canadian portfolio is suddenly a much bigger part of the province's new regulated betting landscape.
What does it mean for Albertans?
Sports Interaction brings the broadest offering of the two, with a full sportsbook alongside online casino products. PartyCasino, meanwhile, is focused primarily on iCasino. That gives Entain a way to target different types of Alberta players while also creating opportunities to connect sports bettors and casino customers across its wider brand ecosystem.
For Albertans, the immediate impact is straightforward: more choice. Sports Interaction and PartyCasino join an increasingly crowded field of regulated platforms, giving consumers another reason to move away from offshore sites. But the real test is whether Alberta's regulated market can do more than simply replicate the grey market with a bigger list of logos.
In the short term, competition should push operators to improve their casino and sports betting bonuses, technology, customer service, betting markets and casino portfolios. It also creates a marketing arms race, something already visible in the province's first weeks of regulated iGaming. The challenge for regulators will be making sure that competition does not come at the expense of responsible gambling safeguards.
Long term, Entain's Alberta expansion could prove even more important. Sports Interaction brings an existing Canadian customer base, PartyCasino adds an established casino brand, and BetMGM gives Entain exposure across multiple segments of the market. That three-brand footprint gives the company a strong platform from which to compete as Alberta's market matures.
More importantly, the move reinforces a broader Canadian trend: regulated iGaming is no longer an Ontario-only story. Alberta is now the country's second province to open its online casino and sports betting market to private operators, and the arrival of brands with years of Canadian experience suggests the next phase will be less about launching the market and more about fighting for market share.
