The regulated Alberta sports betting and online casino market opened on July 13, becoming only the second Canadian province after Ontario to allow private operators to offer regulated online casino and sports betting. More than 20 betting sites launched on day one, joining the government-owned Play Alberta platform. The expansion is significant because Alberta officials have estimated that roughly 70% of the province’s online gambling activity was previously taking place through unregulated offshore platforms.

Now, one of the biggest names in global online gambling is moving closer to joining Canada’s booming new market. Stake Canada Ltd. received iGaming operator registration from Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) on September 24. The company plans to offer both online sports betting and casino games in the province, but its initial Alberta product will not include poker or daily fantasy sports. Stake Canada General Manager Kris Abbott said the company expects its full licensing and operating agreement to follow soon.

Highlights

  • Stake Canada has received iGaming operator registration from AGLC, bringing the global gambling brand closer to launching its sportsbook and casino in Alberta.
  • The Alberta launch represents Stake Canada’s first major breakthrough in Canada’s regulated private iGaming market, while its Ontario application remains pending.
  • Stake’s arrival adds another major international operator to Alberta’s rapidly expanding market, increasing competition as the province attempts to shift players away from unregulated gambling sites.

Stake is finally moving into regulated Canadian gambling

Stake.com is operated by Medium Rare N.V. through a Curaçao license and has built a massive international gambling operation around online casino and sports betting. Easygo, the Australian technology company behind the Stake ecosystem, describes Stake as one of its flagship products and says the platform has more than 60 million registered customers and billions of bets annually.

The company also built its identity around cryptocurrency, rapid payments and a technology-first gambling experience. Easygo says Stake was among the early online casinos to accept bitcoin and that the platform now supports numerous cryptocurrencies alongside traditional betting products. That global footprint has made Stake one of the most recognizable names in online gambling, with sponsorships and partnerships extending into Formula 1, UFC and soccer.

But the regulated Canadian operation is a separate proposition. Stake Canada Ltd. was established specifically to pursue regulated Canadian markets, rather than simply bringing the offshore Stake.com operation into provincial regulatory systems. Alberta's regulated market requires operators to register with the AGLC and enter a commercial operating agreement with the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC), which handles the conduct-and-management side of the market. Operators must satisfy regulatory, financial, responsible-gambling and integrity requirements before taking wagers.

Stake Canada has now cleared the registration stage, but it still has work to complete before Albertans can officially start betting with the regulated Stake product.

Alberta is the first major breakthrough

Stake Canada's arrival has been a longer process than the Alberta registration alone suggests. The company had been pursuing regulated entry into the Ontario sports betting and online casino market, Canada's first competitive private iGaming market, but that process has taken longer than anticipated. Stake Canada still has a pending application with the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO).

Abbott said the company initially planned to use a third-party platform to accelerate its Ontario entry before changing direction and opting to use its own technology. That platform has now been built and certified, leaving the Ontario application before the AGCO as the remaining hurdle. Alberta therefore represents Stake Canada's first breakthrough into a Canadian private iGaming market.

The timing is important. Alberta's October 13 transition deadline for certain operators that previously served the province's grey market is approaching. Stake Canada applied for an extension while it completed its platform and certification work and now believes it is positioned to meet the deadline.

What Stake means for Alberta's crowded market

Stake will not be entering an empty field. More than 30 licensed iGaming sites are already operating in Alberta, following a launch that attracted a large group of established international operators. Other major grey-market brands are also working toward regulated entry, including Bet99 and Betway.

That creates an immediate challenge for Stake: recognition alone will not guarantee market share. The company does, however, bring something many newer Alberta operators cannot replicate overnight: an enormous international brand, an established technology stack and a customer base familiar with the Stake name.

But if Alberta goes smoothly and the AGCO eventually approves its Ontario application, Stake Canada would have access to Canada's two largest competitive private iGaming markets. That would transform Stake's Canadian presence from an offshore-facing brand into a legitimate participant in the country's regulated gambling industry. And with Alberta's market still only two months old, Stake is arriving early enough to fight for its place before the Canadian iGaming landscape settles into a predictable hierarchy.
