The Gunners have won back-to-back meetings with Newcastle, snatching a 2-1 victory at St. James’ Park last September in the reverse fixture.
Arsenal vs Newcastle United Analysis
The last two seasons saw the Gunners collapse late in the title race, and this term, things simply felt different. However, Mikel Arteta’s side has hit a horrible run of form, and as a result, they’ve completely blown their lead at the top of the table. The title is now very much up for grabs, with Arsenal level on 70 points alongside Man City with identical 21-17-5 records.
The Gunners had a clear chance to put themselves ahead in top spot last weekend against Pep Guardiola’s City, but they failed to produce the goods. Opportunities were few and far between for the visitors, and Erling Haaland’s second-half goal proved to be the winner for the Sky Blues. There is absolutely no room for another Arsenal loss at this point, and thankfully, they’ve played very well against the Magpies in recent memory.
While Newcastle was literally in the Champions League Round of 16 this season, their domestic campaign has been a nightmare. Eddie Howe’s men are sitting in 14th place in the Premier League table, and European football next term is likely out of reach. They’re eight points out of the top six heading into Saturday’s encounter in London.
The Magpies have now lost four straight games across all competitions, including three in a row in the Premier League to Sunderland, Crystal Palace, and Bournemouth. Sure, all of these matches ended 2-1, but a defeat is a defeat, and Newcastle continues to come out on the losing end. Perhaps they won’t be getting into Europe, but Howe’s squad can at least play spoiler with a victory or draw against Arsenal.
Arsenal vs Newcastle United Injury News
Martin Odegaard returned from a knee issue last weekend, but Bukayo Saka remains a major doubt with a calf injury. Riccardo Calafiori and Jurrien Timber are still sidelined, though Timber is close to a return, while Mikel Merino continues to recover from foot surgery and is still weeks away.
Tino Livramento is ruled out with a groin injury, and Anthony Gordon is also expected to miss out with a similar issue. Emil Krafth, Fabian Schar, and Joelinton (suspension) are unavailable, but Bruno Guimaraes is set to return after recovering from injury.
Arsenal vs Newcastle United Picks
The pressure is undoubtedly on Arsenal to turn around their form in a hurry, or else they could be looking at another runner-up finish. They’ve also played well on home soil this term, going 12-2-2. The hosts will respond and beat a struggling Newcastle side.
