Alberta opened its competitive regulated iGaming market on July 13, ending Ontario’s four-year run as Canada’s only province with a broad private-operator online gambling framework. The launch brought 22 operator betting sites online on day one, with dozens of brands and suppliers now registered with the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC). Now, BetMGM has introduced something that could change the way Alberta’s new casino market competes for players: authentic live dealer games streamed directly from Las Vegas.
BetMGM announced Aug. 20 that Alberta players can now access live blackjack, roulette and baccarat tables broadcast from MGM Resorts International properties in Las Vegas. The games are hosted by professional dealers and can be played through BetMGM Casino Alberta on computers and betting apps.
Highlights
- BetMGM is now streaming live blackjack, roulette and baccarat from MGM Resorts properties in Las Vegas to players in Alberta.
- The launch expands MGM Live’s existing Canadian presence, following the availability of Las Vegas-streamed games through BetMGM in Ontario.
- The move gives BetMGM a major point of differentiation as competition intensifies in Alberta’s newly regulated iGaming market.
BetMGM Brings Vegas to Alberta
The initial lineup includes several blackjack tables, Vegas Roulette Live and Vegas Baccarat Live. The games are delivered through MGM Resorts' MGM Live partnership with Playtech, which connects online players with gaming taking place inside MGM's iconic Las Vegas properties.
Most live dealer casino content is built specifically for online gambling, with dealers working inside dedicated studios that could be located almost anywhere. MGM Live instead makes Las Vegas itself part of the product. This means that players aren't simply watching a dealer in a generic studio. They are being connected to tables associated with MGM Grand and Bellagio, two of the most recognizable casino properties on the Strip.
MGM Live launched in 2024 with roulette and baccarat streamed from those casino floors, with MGM and Playtech describing the partnership as a way to bring the Las Vegas experience directly to regulated online markets.
For Alberta, that is a significant arrival.
Alberta's iGaming Market Is Moving Quickly
Before July 13, Albertans largely had one regulated online option through Play Alberta. The new framework opened the door to private operators, creating a much more competitive environment while leaving AGLC responsible for regulation and the Alberta iGaming Corporation responsible for commercial agreements with operators. BetMGM is among those newly registered operators. AGLC lists BetMGM Canada Inc. as an iGaming operator with registration running through July 13, 2027.
The market has consequently become a game of differentiation. There are already major international names competing for Alberta customers, including bet365, FanDuel, Caesars, Golden Nugget and BetRivers. Simply having thousands of casino games is no longer enough. Operators need recognizable brands, exclusive content, sophisticated live products and features that give players a reason to choose one platform over another.
BetMGM's Las Vegas connection gives it something most competitors cannot easily replicate.
Who Is BetMGM?
BetMGM is the online gaming and sports betting venture backed by MGM Resorts International and Entain. That relationship gives the operator an unusually valuable asset in the digital casino market: access to one of the world's best-known casino brands and a physical resort portfolio that includes MGM Grand and Bellagio.
BetMGM has already established itself as one of the major operators in Canada's regulated online gambling sector. iGaming Ontario currently lists BetMGM Canada as an approved operator offering casino, poker and sports betting in Ontario.
The Alberta launch therefore brings an established Canadian operation into a new market and adds one of its most distinctive casino experiences.
MGM Live Has Already Been Tested in Ontario
MGM Live was created through MGM Resorts' partnership with Playtech in 2024, with games streamed from MGM Grand and Bellagio. The companies planned to expand beyond roulette and baccarat into additional games, branded television shows and celebrity-hosted entertainment.
Ontario has since become one of the most important international markets for MGM's Las Vegas streaming operation. MGM executives said in 2025 that Ontario and the United Kingdom were the two biggest markets for its "Live from Vegas" content.
That’s what makes Alberta such an important turning point in the Canadian iGaming landscape. It’s the next test of whether a product already resonating with Ontario players can help establish a new market's competitive hierarchy.
What This Means for Canadian iGaming
Alberta's operators are still fighting to establish their brands and build customer loyalty. A BetMGM product that genuinely looks and feels different from conventional online casino content gives the company another weapon in that fight.
In practical terms, Alberta players can sit at home in Calgary or Edmonton and connect to a live table operating thousands of kilometres away in Nevada. For MGM, the benefit is obvious. It can monetize its most valuable physical asset, Las Vegas, without requiring every customer to physically travel there.
This could eventually change what players expect from online casinos. Alberta could become an important market for the next generation of omnichannel casino products, where online gambling and physical casinos increasingly overlap.
