With the NFL season and college football season officially getting underway and the CFL heading into the second half of its campaign, football betting has taken over in Canada once again. At the same time, the country’s regulated iGaming market has continued expanding, with Alberta joining Ontario as the country's second competitive private-operator market in July and Ontario setting another series of records for online gambling activity.
Amid all of that, the CFL has now made its own move. The league officially launched its new official mobile app on Tuesday, September 8, with theScore Bet serving as its presenting partner. The app is available through Apple's App Store and Google Play and gives fans access to real-time scores, breaking news, highlights, statistics, fantasy integration and exclusive content in English and French.
Highlights
- The CFL has launched a new mobile app as the league looks to modernize its digital experience and give fans a more direct connection to scores, news, statistics and other content.
- theScore Bet is the app's presenting partner, with its branding and betting-odds integrations connecting the CFL's digital ecosystem to PENN Entertainment's sportsbook.
- The partnership arrives as Canada's regulated iGaming market expands, giving theScore Bet a larger platform to reach Canadian sports fans while raising broader questions about the growing intersection of sports media and betting.
CFL Launches New App With theScore Bet
On the surface, it is a straightforward technology upgrade. But the more important development is what sits underneath it: theScore Bet is being built directly into the CFL's digital fan experience.
The partnership was first announced in June as a multi-year relationship that made theScore Bet an official gaming partner of the league. The agreement covered more than traditional sponsorship branding. TheScore Bet was also named presenting partner of the CFL's new app and CFL Fantasy product, with plans for custom sports betting bonuses and betting-odds integrations connecting the league's digital properties with the sportsbook. That integration is now live.
The CFL app features theScore Bet branding, while betting odds and scoreboard integrations are designed to connect the league's mobile product with theScore's established sports-media app and theScore Bet sportsbook. In other words, the relationship is not simply putting a sportsbook logo beside CFL scores. It’s tying the league's content, statistics, fantasy products and one of the industry’s top betting apps into one single digital experience.
theScore Bet Expands Its CFL Partnership
TheScore Bet is PENN Entertainment's Canadian sportsbook and online casino brand, built around an unusually close relationship between sports media and wagering. PENN describes the product as a connected experience in which theScore's live scores, news and data sit alongside sports betting and casino functionality. The company launched theScore Bet in Alberta in July, extending a product that had already been operating in Ontario since the province's regulated market opened in 2022.
The CFL partnership therefore gives PENN something more valuable than another advertising placement: repeated access to fans at the moment they are consuming football information. That could become particularly significant during the NFL season. The CFL app will not compete directly with the NFL's enormous American audience, but it can give theScore Bet a distinctly Canadian football environment at a time when bettors are already moving between leagues, games, fantasy contests and live odds.
There is also a geographic angle. The partnership was announced as covering both Ontario and Alberta, meaning the CFL is giving theScore Bet a national sports property just as PENN establishes itself in Canada's newest major regulated iGaming market. Alberta's government has explicitly framed regulation as a way to move gambling activity from the grey market into a system with player protections, advertising rules and provincial oversight.
What Comes Next for the CFL and theScore Bet
For the CFL, the upside is clear. The league is trying to modernize how fans consume the sport, and a dedicated app gives it a direct relationship with those fans rather than relying entirely on broadcasters, social platforms and third-party sports apps.
The NFL opened its 2026 regular season on September 9, while the CFL is heading through the Labour Day stretch toward the playoffs and the November 15 Grey Cup. The CFL's app arrives precisely when football attention is surging across Canada. If the CFL can persuade fans to use its app regularly, the league gains a valuable digital touchpoint for understanding what supporters follow, watch and interact with.
For theScore Bet, every additional interaction creates another opportunity to put sports content and betting markets in front of an audience already demonstrating interest in football. That also creates the central challenge. Canadian regulators and policymakers are paying increasing attention to how gambling is marketed alongside sports. Alberta's framework includes specific restrictions designed to prevent operators from targeting minors and vulnerable people, while concerns about the volume of gambling advertising have already become part of Canada's broader iGaming debate.
The CFL and theScore Bet therefore have plenty to gain, but the partnership will be watched closely as sports betting becomes increasingly embedded in the digital sports experience.
