Alberta’s regulated iGaming market has been the biggest story in Canadian gambling since the province opened its doors to private operators on July 13, ending Ontario’s four-year run as the country’s only competitive commercial iGaming market. The market has quickly become a testing ground for what Canada’s second regulated iGaming jurisdiction can look like, with dozens of the industry’s top betting sites and betting apps flooding in.

And now, just as the Alberta sports betting and casino market has grabbed the industry's attention, one of North America’s biggest sports brands has officially entered Ontario. Fanatics Casino launched in Ontario on Tuesday, Sept. 1, quietly becoming the 49th active operator in the province. Fanatics Betting & Gaming (FBG) received its Ontario casino licenses from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario three weeks earlier, on Aug. 11, before soft-launching the product without a major public rollout.

Highlights

  • Fanatics Casino has launched in Ontario as the province’s 49th active operator, giving the global sports brand its first regulated international iGaming market.
  • The casino-only launch is the first step in a broader Canadian strategy, with Fanatics planning to add sports betting in Ontario and enter Alberta in 2027.
  • Fanatics’ massive sports, merchandise and loyalty ecosystem could give it a distinctive competitive advantage as Ontario’s increasingly crowded iGaming market enters its next stage.

Who is Fanatics?

Founded by Michael Rubin, Fanatics has grown from a sports-merchandise company into a sprawling global sports platform encompassing licensed apparel, trading cards and collectibles, events, advertising, prediction markets and betting. The company says its ecosystem reaches more than 100 million fans globally, with more than 22,000 employees and relationships spanning more than 900 sports properties.

That existing audience is the real weapon. Fanatics Betting & Gaming launched its sportsbook in 2023 before making an enormous expansion push through its $225 million acquisition of the U.S. businesses of PointsBet. The deal brought over PointsBet’s U.S. sports wagering and iGaming operations, technology and personnel, giving Fanatics a much broader gambling footprint almost overnight.

Ontario has already established itself as one of North America’s most competitive regulated iGaming markets. iGaming Ontario describes it as having the highest number of regulated operators on the continent, while its monthly reporting now tracks activity across dozens of operators and gaming websites. But Fanatics is not entering that market as an unknown startup; it’s coming in as one of the most established sports brands in the world.

What is Fanatics Casino?

Fanatics Casino is the other half of that strategy. The company operates online casino gaming alongside its sportsbook, offering products such as slots, blackjack and roulette, while building its own casino content and using FanCash to connect gambling with the broader Fanatics ecosystem. In the U.S., Fanatics Casino currently operates in Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

That is what makes Ontario important. Fanatics is effectively taking a product already proven in the U.S. and placing it into one of the world's most mature regulated iGaming environments. It also gets to establish the brand with Canadian players before bringing its sportsbook to Ontario.

Sports betting is coming in 2027, according to the company's rollout plans, with Alberta also expected to follow in 2027. That makes Tuesday's casino launch less of an isolated expansion and more of a beachhead.

What does this mean for Ontario players?

In the short term, Fanatics faces a brutally crowded Ontario casino market. Being the 49th operator is both a milestone and a warning: there is no shortage of alternatives for players. Fanatics will have to convince casino customers to choose a sports-focused brand over established gambling specialists such as BetMGM, Caesars and bet365.

But Fanatics has something those companies cannot easily replicate: an enormous sports-commerce ecosystem. A customer can buy a jersey, collect a trading card, earn FanCash and eventually bet on a game inside the same broader Fanatics universe. The company has already moved toward consolidating its sports betting, casino and prediction-market products into a single experience, reinforcing its ambition to become a destination rather than simply another sportsbook or casino app.

That could become increasingly important as Canada's regulated markets mature. Ontario has already shown that simply offering legal gambling is not enough. Operators have to fight for retention, brand recognition and share of wallet. Alberta is now beginning that same battle from scratch.

Fanatics has arrived in Canada with the advantage of an established global brand, but the real test is still ahead. If the casino can build a meaningful Ontario customer base before sports betting arrives, Fanatics will enter 2027 with something much more valuable than a new license: an existing Canadian gambling audience ready to be converted into a broader Fanatics customer. And that could make this quiet Sept. 1 launch considerably louder in the years ahead.
