Alberta's regulated online gambling market has finally arrived, and the race to secure a competitive edge has entered a new phase.

On July 13, Alberta will become just the second Canadian province, after Ontario, to launch a competitive commercial iGaming market, replacing the province's longstanding single-operator model dominated by PlayAlberta. Instead of one government-run option, players will soon have access to dozens of licensed sportsbooks and online casinos, creating one of the largest regulated gambling markets in North America. Industry analysts expect more than 50 gaming brands from roughly 30 operators to compete in the Alberta sports betting market, setting the stage for an intensely competitive launch.

With launch day approaching, one of Alberta's biggest land-based casino operators has made perhaps its most important move yet. Sports betting technology giant Kambi announced Tuesday, July 7, that it has signed a multi-year omnichannel agreement with Pure Casino Entertainment, becoming the engine behind both the company's upcoming online sportsbook and its retail sportsbooks across Alberta.

Highlights

  • Pure Casino has partnered with Kambi to power its online and retail sportsbooks as Alberta prepares to launch its regulated iGaming market on July 13.
  • Kambi is one of the industry's leading sportsbook technology providers and its platform could benefit Alberta bettors through better odds, features, and reliability.
  • We explore the broader implications of the deal, including how increased competition could reshape Alberta's sports betting landscape and accelerate the province's growing online gambling industry.

Why Kambi is one of the industry's biggest names

Unlike consumer-facing sportsbooks such as FanDuel or DraftKings, Kambi doesn't operate sportsbooks under its own brand. Instead, it builds and powers sportsbooks for casino operators around the world.

Its turnkey sportsbook platform handles everything from odds compilation and live betting to risk management, pricing algorithms, compliance, account management and trading operations. Rather than building an entire sportsbook from scratch, operators can license Kambi's technology and launch with an established platform that has already been tested across numerous regulated markets.

That reputation was a major selling point for Pure Casino Entertainment.

"As we prepared for the launch of Alberta's regulated online market, we knew selecting a sports betting partner that could offer the right combination of product quality and regulatory certainty was paramount," Pure Casino Entertainment CEO Brad Belhouse said. "Kambi's proven track record made them the clear choice."

Kambi CEO Werner Becher called the agreement another significant step in expanding the company's Canadian presence, saying both organizations share a commitment to delivering engaging sports betting experiences throughout Alberta.

Who is Pure Casino Entertainment?

Pure Casino Entertainment has quickly become one of Alberta's most influential gaming companies. The First Nations-owned operator is part of Indigenous Gaming Partners (IGP), a partnership formed in 2024 between five Nova Scotia Mi'kmaq First Nations and Sonco Gaming. After acquiring Pure Canadian Gaming and recently completing its purchase of Gamehost, the company now operates seven casinos across Alberta, giving it one of the largest retail gaming footprints in the province.

That physical presence gives Pure something many online-only sportsbooks can’t replicate. Rather than launching solely as a digital operator, Pure will be able to connect its casino properties with its online sportsbook through a true omnichannel strategy. Players may eventually benefit from integrated loyalty programs, retail sportsbook experiences, in-person sports betting bonuses and seamless movement between online betting and casino gaming, creating an ecosystem similar to what major U.S. casino companies have built in states with regulated betting.

Why Alberta bettors should pay attention

The biggest winner from Alberta's market opening may ultimately be consumers. Competition typically forces operators to improve pricing, offer better promotions, expand betting menus and invest more heavily in user experience. The regulated Ontario sports betting market demonstrated how quickly competition can reshape an industry that was previously limited to a government monopoly, and Alberta hopes to replicate that success while drawing players away from offshore sportsbooks operating outside provincial oversight.

For most bettors, technology suppliers operate quietly behind the scenes. But in sports betting, the platform provider often determines how good the experience actually is. That's why this partnership matters. Pure's partnership with Kambi immediately positions the company as a credible competitor instead of simply another casino trying to add sports betting.

Launching with one of the industry's most respected sportsbook suppliers reduces many of the technical risks associated with entering a newly regulated market. That means fewer growing pains for customers while allowing Pure to focus on building its brand and leveraging its established casino network. The deal also illustrates how Alberta's market is maturing even before launch. Operators are no longer simply registering for licenses. They're assembling partnerships, investing in premium technology and preparing for what could become Canada's second major regulated online gambling hub.
