NYCFC has picked up right where it left off since MLS returned from the World Cup break, collecting seven points from three league matches. Pascal Jansen’s side beat Columbus Crew 2-1 on the road, followed that with an impressive 3-1 victory over Chicago Fire at Yankee Stadium, and then settled for a 1-1 draw with Toronto FC. Those results have kept New York firmly in the Eastern Conference playoff race at 7-6-5.
The biggest concern Sunday is the absence of Nicolás Fernández Mercau, who is suspended because of yellow-card accumulation. The Argentine has been NYCFC’s most dangerous attacker, scoring 13 goals in 18 appearances and finding the net in all three MLS matches since the break. His production will be difficult to replace, but New York still has options. Agustín Ojeda has five goals and five assists, Hannes Wolf has scored five times, and summer signing Bénie Traoré gives Jansen another clinical player in the final third.
NYCFC struggled in Leagues Cup, losing its final two matches to Cruz Azul and Necaxa after opening with a 2-0 win over Santos Laguna. Still, its league form has been much more convincing.
The Union, however, look far more dangerous than their record suggests. Philadelphia is a perfect 3-0-0 in MLS under interim boss Ryan Richter, beating the New York Red Bulls and Seattle Sounders before securing a dramatic 3-2 comeback win over Atlanta United on Aug. 1. The Union trailed 2-0 before scoring three times after the 73rd minute, including the winner deep into stoppage time.
Milan Iloski has been central to the turnaround. The forward has 10 league goals and scored in six consecutive MLS matches, setting a new Philadelphia club record. Kai Wagner has also made an immediate impact since returning to the club, while Quinn Sullivan is back in the mix after a lengthy injury absence. That gives Richter more quality and depth than Philadelphia had during its horrendous opening stretch.
The Union remains seven points below the playoff line, but belief in this group is finally returning. Every point now matters with the season entering its stretch run. A road trip to Yankee Stadium is another step up in difficulty, especially against an NYCFC side that has been more consistent overall.

Philadelphia’s recent surge makes this a tougher matchup than the standings suggest, and Fernández Mercau’s suspension is a significant loss for the hosts. Nevertheless, NYCFC has been the more reliable team overall and should have enough attacking depth to create chances against a Union backline that has conceded 33 goals in 18 league matches.
