Two New Online Casinos Launch in Alberta’s Booming iGaming Market

Alberta’s regulated iGaming market continues to expand at a remarkable pace, with two more online casino brands going live this week and pushing the province’s commercial market closer to 30 active betting sites just six weeks after launch. Casino Time, a Canadian-owned charitable gaming operator with roots in Ontario, recently launched in Alberta. At the same time, G2 Digital’s Vegas Club Casino made its Canadian debut in the province.
The additions are notable for different reasons. Casino Time represents the arrival of another homegrown operator with an established charitable-gaming network, while Vegas Club Casino brings a brand-new international player to Canada that was only launched in the United States earlier this summer. Together, they show how quickly the Alberta sports betting and casino market is becoming a testing ground for both established Canadian operators and new brands looking for their first foothold in the country.
Highlights
- Casino Time has expanded its online gambling presence from Ontario into Alberta, marking its first entry into another Canadian province.
- G2 Digital’s Vegas Club Casino has launched in Alberta for its Canadian debut after entering New Jersey earlier this year.
- The two launches bring Alberta’s regulated market to 29 commercial sites and intensify competition among online casino operators.
Alberta’s iGaming market is filling up fast
Alberta opened its regulated commercial iGaming market on July 13, becoming only the second Canadian province after Ontario to allow private operators to compete alongside a government-run platform. Twenty-two commercial sites launched on day one, including major names such as bet365, BetMGM, DraftKings, FanDuel and Caesars.
Since then, the market has continued to add operators. Pure Casino Entertainment, a First Nations-owned land-based casino company, launched online on August 7, while Casino Time and Vegas Club Casino have now taken the number of live commercial sites to around 30 across nearly two dozen operating companies. Those sites compete with Play Alberta, which had previously been the province’s only authorized online gambling platform.
That rapid expansion is not simply about giving Albertans more casino games to choose from. Alberta estimates that unregulated operators previously captured about 70% of the province’s iGaming market. The central argument behind legalization was therefore to move existing gambling activity into a system with player protections, responsible-gambling requirements and regulatory oversight.
The latest launches reinforce that strategy, but they also reveal something else: Alberta is quickly becoming one of Canada’s most competitive online gambling battlegrounds.
Who is Casino Time?
Casino Time is a Canadian-owned online casino operator that grew out of Ontario’s charitable gaming industry. The company is affiliated with 10 charitable gaming entertainment venues across Ontario and launched its online casino in the province in 2024 through an operating agreement with iGaming Ontario. Its business model is different from that of many of the multinational brands now entering Alberta. Casino Time was built around Ontario’s charitable gaming ecosystem, where land-based gaming facilities generate money for community organizations.
The company says it has more than 30 years of land-based gaming experience behind its ownership group and supports hundreds of Canadian charities through its broader charitable-gaming relationships. Its online platform offers slots, table games, live dealer games, bingo and other casino products, with content supplied by major studios including Evolution, IGT, Light & Wonder and Pragmatic Play.
Its Alberta launch is the first time Casino Time has taken its community-focused gaming brand outside Ontario, giving the company an opportunity to determine whether its Canadian identity can translate into a province dominated by much larger international operators.
Vegas Club Casino brings a new name to Canada
Vegas Club Casino arrives with considerably less history in the Canadian market, but plenty of industry experience behind it. The brand was created by G2 Digital, which was co-founded by casino veterans Greg Carlin and Dan Alexander. Carlin previously co-founded and led Rush Street Gaming and Rush Street Interactive, while Alexander has held senior positions at companies including Mansion, bet365 and PlayStar.
Vegas Club Casino launched in New Jersey in June through a market-access partnership with Caesars Entertainment before expanding its ambitions into other regulated North American markets. G2 Digital has positioned the brand around a more traditional casino philosophy, emphasizing straightforward promotions, player relationships and a premium experience rather than trying to simply replicate the biggest operators.
Alberta is now its first Canadian market. That makes the launch particularly interesting. Vegas Club is not entering an established Canadian market with years of brand recognition. It is arriving while Alberta itself is still forming its competitive hierarchy.
What the launches mean for Alberta
The immediate impact for players is simple: more choice. But the bigger consequence will be felt by operators. With a wide variety of new commercial sites already live, Alberta is approaching the point where simply being licensed will not be enough. Operators will need to distinguish themselves through game selection, casino and sports betting bonuses, customer service, technology and brand identity.
The long-term question, then, is how many brands can actually build sustainable businesses. Casino Time has a local, community-oriented story to sell. Vegas Club has experienced leadership and a fresh brand. Their launches suggest Alberta's next phase will be less about opening the market and more about fighting for market share within it.
