The NFL is back, but before we get to our first Sunday of the season, we need to head down to the bottom of the world, where the Los Angeles Rams and their division rivals, the San Francisco 49ers, will battle it out in Australia.

The Rams come into the season as prohibitive Super Bowl favourites so it should be no surprise they are favoured to win their season opener against the Niners as well. Do they deserve all the hype though? Read on for the latest NFL betting odds for the game as well as our analysis and predictions.

Game Pick

The Los Angeles Rams are being picked by everyone and their grandmother to win the Super Bowl this year. And with the talent they’ve amassed, it’s hard to argue. But they do lack one thing: depth. If we learned anything from the season opener on Wednesday that saw both Sam Darnold and A.J. Brown exit with injuries, depth is key.

Everyone but Aaron Donald will be healthy on Thursday at the Melbourne Cricket Ground for the Rams, however. The reason we don’t like their favourite odds against the 49ers has a lot to do with how they’ve handled the preparation for this game.

It’s a 15-hour flight and 17-hour time difference. For anyone who’s done the flight across continental North America, which is just a three-hour time difference, you can’t even imagine how brutal 17 hours is going to be. Not to mention they have to play a football game. And yet, the Rams decided to fly into Melbourne on Wednesday, giving them just one day to acclimate.

The 49ers, meanwhile, have been in Australia for nearly a week and have no doubt shaken off the last of their rust and jet lag by now. Los Angeles will be right in the middle of theirs come kickoff time. They’ve got a lot of talent and the 49ers have a few injuries at wide receiver, but we think this lapse in judgement by the Rams is going to be costly for them in Week 1.

With all those receivers out, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and his high-powered offence are going to rely heavily on Christian McCaffrey as it did often last year, both as a runner and a receiver.

CMC is familiar with a heavy workload. He had 139 scrimmage yards on 30 touches and 96 on 20 in his two matchups with the Rams last year. He has topped 100 yards from scrimmage in three of his four matchups with the Rams since joining the 49ers in 2022.

He averaged 125 yards from scrimmage last year when he put up 2,126 total, second-most in the NFL. And CMC was consistent, which is why we like a bet on him to hit the century mark to start off the campaign here. He hit it in 12 of 17 games last year, and we like the -130 odds we’re getting from sports betting sites on this one.
