FC Barcelona vs Newcastle Analysis
The Catalans are having a fine campaign overall. They’re four points clear of Real Madrid at the top of LaLiga, compiling a 23-1-4 record. Hansi Flick’s men also finished in fifth spot in the Champions League group stages, automatically qualifying for the Round of 16. Barca just hammered Sevilla 5-2 over the weekend in league play, but Newcastle gave them a serious run for their money last Tuesday on Tyneside.
The visitors actually went down by a goal in the 86th minute after Harvey Barnes hit the back of the net, but phenom Lamine Yamal came to the rescue in the dying minutes of injury time, scoring from the penalty spot in the 97th minute. Barcelona was definitely not at its best, but returning home for the second leg should make a difference. They went 3-0-1 in the group stages at Camp Nou.
Newcastle aren’t likely to book a spot in Europe for next season as they sit six points out of the top six in the Premier League. It’s been a disappointing campaign to their standards, but the Magpies have gained some momentum in recent weeks. Eddie Howe’s side has won back-to-back games in the league action, beating Manchester United and Chelsea.
Anthony Gordon produced the goods on Saturday against the Blues, and the momentum from the draw with Barca definitely helped Newcastle in their victory over a solid Chelsea side. The Magpies are in very good form, and while taking down Barcelona is a tall task, it’s very much possible considering how well they’ve been performing.
FC Barcelona vs Newcastle Injury News
Barcelona remain without Jules Kounde, Frenkie de Jong, and Alejandro Balde due to hamstring injuries, while Andreas Christensen continues his recovery from a knee issue. There was positive news surrounding Lamine Yamal, who returned from illness to appear off the bench against Sevilla and is expected to start on Wednesday.
Newcastle is still dealing with several injury absences, with Bruno Guimaraes (hamstring), Lewis Miley (thigh), Fabian Schar (ankle), and Emil Krafth (knee) all sidelined. The Magpies could receive a boost depending on the fitness of Sandro Tonali, who missed the weekend win over Chelsea due to illness and will be assessed ahead of kickoff.
FC Barcelona vs Newcastle Picks
Newcastle simply outplayed Barcelona in the first leg. While I believe they will keep this second leg competitive, Barcelona is a side that is familiar with this big stage, and their home form is impressive.
