The Favorites
Oklahoma City Thunder (+300): The Thunder are big favorites to win both the NBA Cup and NBA championship. We like them a lot more to win the latter, however. They lost in the Finals of last year’s NBA Cup, but now that they’ve won the big one, we believe they will be more focused on that rather than an in-season tournament. We don’t love how short these odds are anyway, so let’s find some better value elsewhere.
Cleveland Cavaliers (+700): We actually like the Cavs a lot here. They are the type of underachieving team that could put some extra importance on the NBA Cup just to get some more belief within the team. They are likely to breeze through the Eastern Conference during this tournament considering all of the East stars that are convalescing from major surgeries early in the season. And the +700 odds from Ontario sportsbooks are certainly offering more than enough value.
Houston Rockets (+900): The Rockets made the biggest move of the offseason in acquiring Kevin Durant. They also got rid of a couple of questionable locker room characters in the process, beautifully marrying experienced veteran champions (Durant and Fred VanVleet) with exciting young talent (Amen Thompson and Alperen Sengun). We like them as an option out of the Western Conference here.
Long Shot Value Bets
- Denver Nuggets (+1,400): The Nuggets seem to be reloading with intelligence during the 2025 offseason. They overachieved mightily after firing their head coach, and their new young one is likely to treat the tourney seriously.
- Orlando Magic (+1,400): One of our overall dark horses for the season, Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner are an excellent duo, and the addition of Desmond Bane shows they’re serious about winning some silverware this season.
- Dallas Mavericks (+5,000): There is no more fun bet in the NBA right now than the enigma that is Dallas. Cooper Flagg, Klay Thompson, and Anthony Davis make for a very interesting proposition. If anything, throw a half-unit or something on this team, because they will be an engrossing story next season, and at +5,000 odds, it’s definitely worth the squeeze.
