There are under four weeks until the start of the NFL regular season, so we’re furiously flipping through dozens and dozens of NFL futures betting markets before it’s too late. Here, we begin our series looking at one of the favorites among NFL bettors: over/under win totals.

Canadian sportsbooks generally offer 1-3 numbers (ie: over/under 10.5 wins) for each team, with odds for them to go over or under each number. Because of that, we’re doing this by division, starting with the AFC East. And this one is interesting, because all four teams have pretty easy schedules. Even the Bills, who have the shortest odds to win the most games in the entire NFL, are top 10 in strength of schedule.

Highlights

  • The Buffalo Bills have the highest over/under win total (12.5 at +120) in the NFL
  • All four AFC East teams are in the top 12 for easiest strength of schedule
  • The Patriots only play four playoff teams from last year

New England Patriots.429 (3rd)6.5 (-400/+300)7.5 (-180/+145)8.5 (+100/-130)
New York Jets.460 (7th)4.5 (-280/+215)5.5 (-150/+120)6.5 (+120/-150)

Buffalo Bills: Despite going 13-4 last year, the Bills actually have a pretty easy schedule. If they can beat the Baltimore Ravens in Week 1, they could very well go into a Week 9 matchup with the Chiefs undefeated. We think they lose to the Chiefs, lose once to the Patriots, and drop two more from the four-week span where they play the Bucs, Texans, Steelers, and Bengals. 13 wins is well within the realm of possibility, so the +120 odds on Buffalo to win over 12.5 games is enticing, but the -170 odds on them to win over 11.5 offer a lot more security.

Best Bet: Buffalo Bills Over 11.5 Wins (-170)

Miami Dolphins: We don’t see the Dolphins getting anywhere near the playoffs this season. They have gone 3-3 in the division in two of the last three years, and that seems reasonable again this time around. They should be able to get two wins out of four against the weak NFC South, but they’ll likely only get one more against the tough AFC North. A Week 1 matchup with the Colts, who are a mess, would get them to seven, but we can’t see them going much beyond that.

Best Bet: Miami Dolphins Under 7.5 Wins (-115)

New England Patriots: The Patriots could surprise Ontario sportsbooks based on the odds we’ve got here. This young team is not quite ready for the postseason, but they could make it interesting down the stretch. A 3-3 record in the division seems fair again here. After that, it’s wide open, as the Pats have the third-easiest schedule in the league. They play the Giants and the Titans, two of the teams predicted to win the fewest games this year (both wins). They should also be able to get three wins from four against the NFC South. That’s already eight wins right there, so if they simply beat one team from the AFC North (the Browns?), they could get to nine wins. We’re going to take the risk on this one.

Best Bet: New England Patriots Over 8.5 Wins (+100)

New York Jets: Always the ugly duckling of this AFC East quartet, the Jets are in for a rough debut season for Justin Fields and Aaron Glenn. We’re thinking they should be able to steal one apiece from Miami and New England. They should get two out of three against the Panthers, Saints, and Falcons. A win against the Browns at home also seems reasonable. We’re not very confident beyond that, however.

Best Bet: New York Jets Under 6.5 Wins (-150)
