Lions vs. Chargers Point Spread/Moneyline Prediction
The NFL certainly chose a fun matchup here with one of the most exciting teams in the league in the Lions going up against an up-and-coming (and quite intriguing) Chargers team that plays in the second-biggest market in the league. However, Hall of Fame weekend is more about the pageantry and the Hall of Fame inductees than the actual Game.
This is the preseason game where you’re likely to see the fewest snaps from the players you know. Justin Herbert and Jared Goff might not even play, and if they do, it will be for no more than one series. There’s no way to know enough about the deep dark depths of these teams’ depth charts we’re going to see on Thursday. So this is all about two things: backup QBs and head coaches.
From a coaching perspective, Jim Harbaugh and Dan Campbell share a lot of similarities. Beloved by their charges, able to find early success wherever they go, and oozing passion. However, Campbell saves most of that for the regular season, as he is just 3-6-1 in the preseason in his career, including a 1-3 mark in Week 1.
Harbaugh, meanwhile, is also 1-3 in Week 1 of the preseason, but his teams would get better as the month-long mini-season wore on, putting up a 10-6 preseason record with the 49ers and last year in L.A. Advantage Chargers.
In the backup quarterback department, the Chargers have Taylor Heinicke behind Justin Herbert. That dude is a gamer and a fiery competitor who will undoubtedly be trying to hold Trey Lance off for that backup job. Let’s not forget, Heinicke started 15 games back in 2021 and has started another 14 games since then.
Meanwhile, the Lions will trot out Hendon Hooker (nine career pass attempts) and/or Kyle Allen (one pass attempt in the last two years). Hooker is intriguing despite the lack of playing time as a rookie, we’ll admit. But once again, advantage Chargers.
Prediction: Los Angeles Chargers Moneyline (-110)
Lions vs. Chargers Over/Under Prediction
We like the Chargers a lot—though we might actually wait until closer to kickoff to make that moneyline bet and see if we can get plus odds from Ontario sportsbooks, because the public will love the Lions—but we like the under here even more. As we said, this weekend is more about the players being honored with inductions into the Pro Football Hall of Fame rather than the HOF Game itself.
Because of that, we generally don’t get the best quality football. And when that’s the case, it’s usually the defenses getting the better of it. 12 of the last 16 Hall of Fame Games have gone under their total, including nine that went under this game’s total of 33.0.
Prediction: Game Total Points Under 33.0 (-110)/Betway
