The Favorites
OKC Thunder (+125): We don’t often like to suggest betting on the top favorite when it comes to futures, but the Thunder feel like a pretty safe bet, if one that is lacking any sort of offseason value. It will be tough to topple the Thunder, so if you don’t mind the +125 odds, go ahead with this one. We’d rather look for a little bit more value elsewhere, however.
Houston Rockets (+500): The Rockets’ acquisition of Kevin Durant while only losing Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks was a thing of beauty. This young team now has the perfect veteran star to lead them in the big moments they couldn’t handle against the Warriors last year. The +500 odds we’re getting from betting apps are shorter than we were expecting, but this is our favorite bet on the board in terms of value. A Thunder-Rockets Western Finals feels likely.
Los Angeles Lakers (+800): As we’ve said before: if you’re going to bet on big teams like the Lakers, you usually have to pay a premium. There’s no way their odds should be this short considering the state of flux their roster is in right now. They have Luka and LeBron, but beyond that, it’s anyone’s guess.
Minnesota Timberwolves (+800): Anthony Edwards disappointed in the playoffs last month. He will need to be better this season, but he will also need another scorer in the starting five with him and Julius Randle. If they don’t make a major move, these odds are way too short. And even if they do, we don’t think Minny should be rated this high.
Long Shot Value Bets
- Denver Nuggets (+900): Denver’s new coach, David Adelman, took the eventual NBA champs to a Game 7 with only like 12 games of experience. Imagine what he can do with a whole offseason. Oh, and they still have Nikola Jokic, which means they’re always worth a look at odds like these.
- San Antonio Spurs (+1,600): This is our favorite long shot, as we think the Victor Wembanyama-Chris Paul-De’Aaron Fox trinity is going to work like gang-busters. They’ll miss Pop, but his presence will still be felt from the front office.
- Dallas Mavericks (+2,000): The Dallas Mavericks made one of the blunders of the century in trading Luka Doncic. However, that loss was blunted somewhat by their “surprise” win at the NBA lottery, where they earned the top pick. They now have Cooper Flagg paired with Anthony Davis and Klay Thompson. Kyrie Irving will return at some point as well.
