The Favorite: Cameron Boozer, Memphis Grizzlies (+240)

The son of former All-Star power forward Carlos Boozer, with whom he has already appeared in many advertisements alongside his twin Cayden, who remains at Duke. Cameron Boozer was named National College Player of the Year last year and also earned consensus All-American honours to boot. He scored 20+ in three of four NCAA Tournament games as his Blue Devils went out in the Elite Eight.

Boozer has arguably the best chance to come in and be the main man as a rookie, the same way Cooper Flagg did last year on his way to the ROY trophy. Ja Morant is gone, so Boozer will be the top scoring option, meaning he could easily average 18-20 points a night, which puts him in a great spot to win this award.

There aren’t many other quality players on that Memphis Grizzlies roster now, so Boozer’s quality will likely stick out as well. Don’t be surprised if the athletic 6’10” power forward leads all rooks in double-doubles as well.

Our Best Bet: Darius Acuff Jr., Sacramento Kings (+450)

The guy most likely to challenge Boozer is the No. 7 overall pick out of Arkansas, Darius Acuff Jr. He’s listed as 6’3”, but he’s likely closer to 6’2”. But his diminutive stature has never stopped him from getting buckets. He led the SEC with 23.5 points per game last season while shooting 48 percent from the field and 44 from deep.

Acuff cemented his status as the best scorer in this class with performances of 24, 36, and 28 as he led the Razorbacks to the Sweet Sixteen during March Madness a few months ago. The Kings are getting set for a rebuild, and Acuff seems like the centerpiece. They’re going to give him every opportunity to score 30+ and we’d be surprised if he didn’t lead all rookies by averaging over 20 points a game.

Dark Horse Candidate: Yaxel Lendeborg, Golden State Warriors (+2,000)

If you want a little more value, we like the best player on the National Championship-winning Michigan Wolverines, Yaxel Lendeborg. Now, if the Warriors land LeBron James, Lendeborg probably won’t get enough minutes to win ROY. But if the King stays away, Lendeborg could start for the Warriors and became a key cog in their attack. Lendeborg is 6’9” with what they call in NFL draft circles “a pro ready skill set.” He can score and he can defend multiple positions, so at +2,000, a dart throw isn’t a bad idea.
