These two have met many times in the Champions League over the years, but their most recent clash was in the CWC Final last summer, where Chelsea hammered Paris 3-0 in New Jersey.
PSG vs Chelsea Analysis
There’s a target on PSG’s back in the Champions League after winning it all last term, beating Inter Milan in the grand finale. They have every chance to capture the ultimate prize again, but their side of the bracket is full of European giants. Luis Enrique’s men compiled a 4-2-2 record in group play, finishing in 11th. That resulted in a two-legged play-off with Ligue 1 counterparts Monaco.
It wasn’t easy, though, just barely beating them 5-4 on aggregate. Monaco got revenge on PSG over the weekend, however, running out 3-1 winners in league action. Paris now sits only one point clear of RC Lens at the top of the Ligue 1 table. While winning their domestic league is important, going as far as possible in the Champions League is undoubtedly just as important, and the Round of 16 presents an opportunity for redemption.
Chelsea has been relatively inconsistent this term, but hiring Liam Rosenoir to replace Enzo Maresca has seemingly made a difference. The Blues are in fifth spot in the Premier League and remain in the mix for a top-four spot, and they were solid in the UCL group stages, going 5-1-2.
Rosenoir’s squad heads into this first leg in the French capital in good form. They hammered Aston Villa 4-1 in their last Premier League match, while also beating Wrexham over the weekend in the FA Cup fourth round. But while they’ll have fond memories of taking down PSG last July in the United States, Chelsea is fully aware that the hosts are an elite side, and if they’re going to find a result on French soil, they must bring their absolute best.
PSG vs Chelsea Injury News
PSG will be without Fabian Ruiz (knee) and Quentin Ndjantou (hamstring), while Joao Neves is pushing to return from an ankle injury that has kept him out of the last three matches and will face a late fitness test. Ousmane Dembele made a brief return from a calf issue as a substitute against Monaco and could be fit enough to start.
Chelsea remain without Estevao Willian and Jamie Gittens (both hamstring), Levi Colwill (ACL) and suspended winger Mykhaylo Mudryk. However, Wesley Fofana is expected to return from a thigh injury and could slot straight back into the starting XI.
PSG vs Chelsea Picks
Chelsea is in fine form, winning five of their last nine across all competitions. PSG isn’t looking great, and they just suffered a brutal defeat. I’ll take these two to share the spoils here in a hard-fought draw.
