Georgia vs Alabama Analysis
While Georgia already has their chance to fight for a National Championship in the CFP, this game represents an opportunity for revenge. We’ve seen the Bulldogs struggle immensely against Bama in recent memory, despite their several national titles in the years past. Usually, it’s another program that manages to eliminate the Tide – not Georgia. Their only victory against them over the last handful of years was in 2021 in the National Championship in Indianapolis.
Smart’s team had a solid season, finishing 11-1 overall and 7-1 in conference play. Their only loss was to Bama, and after that, the Bulldogs ran off eight straight victories. The No. 3-ranked program in the country beat Georgia Tech in their season finale last weekend by a score of 16-9, and they also took down the Texas Longhorns a few weeks ago. Georgia is led by quarterback Gunner Stockton, who is completing over 70% of his passes for 2,535 yards and 20 touchdowns against five interceptions. The main weapon to watch out for is Zachariah Branch, who has reeled in a team-high 68 receptions for 691 yards and four TDs. But he was held to just three grabs in the loss to Bama.
There’s definitely a different feel around Tuscaloosa without Nick Saban around, but Kalen DeBoer is doing his very best to keep Alabama relevant. After being snubbed from the College Football Playoff last season, a victory on Saturday would solidify the Tide’s spot in the expanded CFP, and that would potentially mean playoff football at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Bama finished the year 10-2, losing to Oklahoma a couple of weeks ago and Florida State in the season opener. DeBoer is 2-0 in his Bama career against Smart and Georgia, which is a positive sign.
While Alabama’s offense has promise under QB Ty Simpson, it’s their defense that really sets them apart. The Crimson Tide is 12th in fewest total yards allowed, and they’re also giving up just 16.5 PPG. That ranks 11th in the country. There’s obviously a lot at stake for Bama on Saturday, and their defense has shown the ability to step up when needed. A big performance here could be the difference between them making the CFP and not.
Georgia vs Alabama Picks
It’s hard to ignore Alabama’s sheer dominance against Georgia, and they’re literally staring down a potential berth in the Playoff. I’ll take the visitors to roll into Atlanta and beat the Bulldogs once again.
