Chelsea will be looking to eliminate another Brazilian opponent in the FIFA Club World Cup on Tuesday, July 8 when they go to battle with Fluminense in the semifinals of the competition. The kick-off is scheduled for 2 PM EST at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Blues took down Palmeiras in the quarterfinals but it wasn’t easy, with Malo Gusto bagging a late winner for the Premier League giants. As for Fluminese, they pulled off an upset in the Round of 16 by beating UCL finalists Inter Milan before taking down Simone Inzaghi’s Al-Hilal in the last eight over the weekend. Chelsea vs Fluminense Analysis
The Blues have been in top form since the end of the Premier League campaign, where they managed to lock down the final Champions League spot for next season. Enzo Maresca’s men have won eight of their last nine matches, most notably winning the Conference League title, beating Real Betis in the showpiece. Chelsea has carried their impressive play into the States, finishing as runners-up in group play behind Flamengo, who shockingly beat the English outfit.
But, it was all business after that defeat, with the Blues grabbing victories against Tunis and LAFC. Maresca’s group then ran through Portuguese giants Benfica in the Round of 16, securing a 4-1 win. Chelsea kept it rolling in the quarters with a tight victory over Palmeiras thanks to goals from Cole Palmer and Gusto. Youngster Estevao scored the lone goal for the Brazilian club, showcasing his talent before joining his new club in England following the conclusion of the Club World Cup.
Fluminense may be having a disappointing league campaign in Brazil, but they’ve undoubtedly brought their best in this tournament. The club was also a runner-up in group action behind Dortmund. They’ve yet to taste defeat, winning three times and drawing twice. Flu managed to grab a point in Group F against BVB. The victory over Inter was by the most impressive of the lot, eliminating a club that was competing for Europe’s ultimate prize only a month ago.
Fluminense played a very strong game in the quarters against Al-Hilal, with Martinelli firing his side ahead in the 40th minute. Marcus Leonardo equalized earlier in the second period for the Riyadh-based club, but Flu got the last laugh, with Hercules netting the winner in the 70th minute. This semifinal will be a special one for skipper Thiago Silva, who will face his former club here. Silva has anchored a strong Flu backline who have only conceded one goal in the second half in the States. They will be tested though by a strong, confident Chelsea attack.
Chelsea vs Fluminense Picks
The Blues have really impressed in the Club World Cup and while I do expect Fluminense to put up a fight, the English giants will come out on top. They cannot be stopped right now and continue to produce the goods on both ends of the pitch. Lock in the moneyline.
