For the fourth straight year, the Formula One schedule takes the best drivers in the world to Montreal, Quebec for the Canadian Grand Prix after two years away in 2020-2021. While McLaren has been dominating this season, they don’t have a car in the front row for the first time in 2025.
That means this one’s up for grabs, and betting apps are offering plus odds on everyone in the field. A rare occurrence. With George Russell and Max Verstappen starting at the front and the McLarens back in third and seventh, there’s a lot to consider here. We’ve got you covered with predictions and odds for Sunday’s race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in downtown Montreal.
Highlights
- A driver in the front row has won every Canadian Grand Prix since 2015
- Max Verstappen has won every Canadian Grand Prix he’s started in the front row
- 6 of 9 races this year have been won by the driver on pole

The Front Row
When McLaren overtook Red Bull for Formula One supremacy last season, no one expected them to continue that dominance this thoroughly into the next campaign. But that is just what’s happened. They have notched 16 of a possible 18 podiums, and have also nailed one-two finishes in three races this year, including the most recent one at the Spanish Grand Prix.
McLaren’s two wunderkind drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, have qualified in the top four in seven of the nine races so far. But for the first time on Saturday, neither driver finished in the top two. Piastri will fire away from third place, while Lando Norris is down in seventh. McLaren and their drivers have proven that they can overcome the few qualifying mistakes they make, but maybe not here.
Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is a classic street track that goes right through downtown Montreal next to the Saint Lawrence River. It’s a tough track to pass on, not quite as bad as Monaco, but there’s a reason that qualifying is so important in Montreal. The last driver who didn’t start in the front row at the Canadian Grand Prix and came back to win it was Daniel Ricciardo… for Red Bull… in 2014.
The smiling Aussie started from back in sixth. But that was clearly an anomaly. In eight races since then, it was the driver on pole or the one starting right next to him in second that took the checkered flag in Montreal.
Before Ricciardo’s shock win in 2014? There were only three other winners from outside the front row since 2004. Jenson Button in 2011, Kimi Raikkonen in 2005, and Michael Schumacher in 2004. Interestingly enough, Ricciardo came in from sixth, Button came in from seventh, Raikkonen came in from seventh, and Schumacher came in from sixth.
Based on that information, it’s looking like Max Verstappen and George Russell, and Fernando Alonso and Lando Norris are the ones vying here. The former two start in front, while the latter pair are in sixth and seventh. Alonso’s Aston Martin can be discounted, but the other three are real options here on sports betting sites.
Verstappen is the favorite at +162, which makes sense considering he’s the three-time reigning champ at Villeneuve. Russell comes in at +260, and Norris at +750. Piastri, starting in third and currently holding a commanding lead in the drivers championship, is second in the odds at +187.
We believe that the front row trend will continue. Verstappen doesn’t often choke away a lead like that, and he’s had great success in Canada recently. Russell is no chump, but Verstappen is like a shark when there’s blood in the water. If you want a long shot, that eerie 6-7 winner trend makes Norris interesting at +750.
