Marlins vs Diamondbacks Analysis
The Marlins haven't had much success lately, but they're coming off an impressive weekend against one of baseball's best clubs. Miami took two of three from the Los Angeles Dodgers, finishing the series with a dramatic 6-4 victory on Sunday thanks to a walk-off home run from Agustin Ramirez. The Fish are still just 3-7 across their last 10 games, but they have shown the ability to cause problems for playoff contenders.
Janson Junk gets the ball for Miami, and the right-hander will be looking to bounce back from an absolute nightmare of an outing. Junk was tagged for eight earned runs on eight hits across just three innings against the New York Mets last Wednesday. That inflated his ERA to 4.54 on the season. His previous two starts were much more encouraging, allowing just two earned runs across 9 2/3 innings, but his inconsistency is certainly concerning against an Arizona lineup with everything to play for.
The Diamondbacks, meanwhile, are right in the middle of the National League Wild Card race. Arizona entered this series at 79-71 and just 2.5 games behind the San Diego Padres for the final postseason spot. Torey Lovullo's club has gone 6-4 across its last 10 games, but there isn't much room for error with the regular season quickly winding down. Every game is crucial at this point, especially against a Marlins team sitting below .500.
Michael Soroka will make his second start since returning from an arm injury. The veteran owns an impressive 3.53 ERA and 8-5 record this season, although his first outing back didn't exactly go to plan. Soroka surrendered a three-run homer to Bobby Witt Jr. in Arizona's 5-2 loss to Kansas City last Wednesday. He should be in a better position to give the Diamondbacks some length this time around, and on paper, Arizona has the clear starting-pitching advantage over Junk.
Marlins vs Diamondbacks Picks
Miami proved over the weekend that it can't be overlooked, but I prefer Arizona here. Junk is coming off his worst start of the season, while Soroka should be able to settle in after making his first appearance in several weeks against Kansas City. Take the Diamondbacks.
