It did feel like a very long three months, but the NBA season is finally back. And it has not disappointed through the first couple of weeks of action. Many thought the Philadelphia 76ers wouldn’t be a fun watch until the playoffs, but they’re top of the East at 7-1 as of this writing. Even the Washington Wizards are above .500 right now.

Out West, it’s an even more surprising start in the standings. The Houston Rockets, Memphis Grizzlies, and Portland Trail Blazers are the only teams with just one loss left in the conference. All of this has led to some notable movement in the odds table for MVP.

Is it still a simple two-horse race between SGA and Wemby? Think again. Read on for the latest NBA betting odds for the MVP race!

Highlights

  • Wemby and SGA are no longer in a two-way race for this award
  • Luka Doncic has thrown his hat in the ring, now sitting second on the odds board
  • Jayson Tatum, Tyrese Maxey, and Cooper Flagg are some other notable risers

Odds Movement

Okay, Victor Wembanyama and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander are still both near the top of this table. It’s true. But Luka Doncic has shoved himself right into their little private race and made it a public one. That’ll happen when a guy averages over 38 points a game during a 6-2 start for the Lakers.

However, before you jump on Doncic’s +200 odds, which are really not offering a ton of value anyway, you might be happy to know this little tidbit: scoring isn’t as respected by the MVP voters as you might think.

Including Doncic’s current pace, there will have only been 10 seasons in NBA history where someone averaged 35+ points a game. Only one of those seasons ended with an MVP trophy, and it was Wilt Chamberlain averaging 37.6 a night as a rookie in 1959-1960. If Doncic wants a real shot at this award he’ll have to keep the Lakers among the top three seeds. A hiccup from Wemby or SGA wouldn’t hurt either.

Elsewhere, Jayson Tatum has halved his preseason odds from +2,000 down to +1,000. Tyrese Maxey is now in the mix after not being on our radar back during the summer. Youngster Cooper Flagg is also still a very long shot, but he’s down from +10,000 to +6,000, not an insignificant jump.
