UCLA vs Minnesota Odds

UCLA are favored by 5.5 points at football betting sites, with their moneyline sitting at -264. Minnesota are priced at +190 to hand the Bruins their first defeat, while the O/U is a modest 39.5 points.

These programs have met just four times previously, with Minnesota winning three. The Golden Gophers took the most recent encounter in 2024, edging UCLA 21-17 at the Rose Bowl.

UCLA vs Minnesota Analysis

UCLA has been one of college football's biggest surprises this season, winning eight straight games to put themselves firmly in the College Football Playoff conversation. The Bruins are also 5-0 in Big Ten play and have already beaten Oregon, Wisconsin, and Michigan State.

However, it's their defense that has truly set them apart. UCLA is allowing just 13.4 points and 260.8 total yards per contest, ranking among the nation's best in both categories. They've been particularly dominant against the run, surrendering only 87.3 rushing yards per game.

The Bruins put together another outstanding defensive performance last Saturday, shutting out Nevada 27-0. UCLA forced four interceptions, including a pick-six from Derrick Barksdale, while limiting the Wolf Pack to just 176 total yards. It was the program's first shutout since 2015.

Offensively, UCLA have leaned heavily on their ground game, averaging 219.5 rushing yards per contest. Running back Wayne Knight has been a major contributor, scoring 14 total touchdowns this season. Quarterback Ty Dieffenbach has also stepped into a larger role following Nico Iamaleava's season-ending injury.

Dieffenbach completed 16 of 30 passes for 178 yards and a touchdown against Nevada, adding another score on the ground. While the Bruins aren't overly explosive through the air, their ability to control possession and establish the run has been crucial to their success.

Minnesota have experienced an up-and-down campaign under P.J. Fleck, sitting at 5-3 overall and 3-2 in conference play. The Golden Gophers have secured impressive victories over Washington, Michigan, and Iowa, but consistency remains an issue.

Last weekend, Minnesota pushed defending national champions Indiana to the brink before falling 23-16 in overtime. Quarterback Drake Lindsey completed 20 of 37 passes for 120 yards and a touchdown, but the Golden Gophers struggled to generate much offense against a formidable Hoosiers defense.

That has been a recurring problem this season. Minnesota are averaging just 309 total yards per game, including a disappointing 99.5 rushing yards. Their inability to establish the ground game could be particularly concerning against UCLA's outstanding defensive front.

However, the Golden Gophers have been relatively solid defensively themselves, allowing 20.5 points and 305 yards per contest. They've also won four of their five home games, suggesting UCLA won't have an easy afternoon in Minneapolis.

UCLA vs Minnesota Picks

Minnesota have been competitive against quality opponents, but UCLA's defensive advantage is difficult to overlook. The Bruins have allowed just 27 combined points across their last four games, and the Golden Gophers have struggled tremendously to run the football.

I expect UCLA to control possession, establish its ground attack, and force Lindsey into difficult passing situations. Minnesota should keep things relatively close at home, but the Bruins have enough talent on both sides of the ball to cover this manageable spread.
