Odds Movement

We’ve seen a ton of movement on the odds board since we first looked at this futures market way back in April. The same three guys are still at the top, but while Titans WR Carnell Tate (+550) stayed at the same level, both Cardinals RB Jeremiyah Love (+250 to +475) and Raiders QB Fernando Mendoza (+400 to +550) saw their odds jump quite a bit.

All the other QBs saw their odds skyrocket even more though. Arizona’s Carson Beck, L.A.’s Ty Simpson, and Pittsburgh’s Drew Allar all saw their odds nearly double during the summer. Though that’s not to say there’s no value on the latter of those, but more on that in a bit.

Saints WR Jordyn Tyson was fourth on the odds board in April but has plummeted after it was announced a hamstring injury would force him to miss half the campaign. 49ers WR De’Zhaun Stribling and Ravens WR Ja’Kobi Lane both came out of nowhere to become contenders, and Philly’s freshman wideout Makai Lemon remains in the mix as well.

Our Best Bet On the Board: Fernando Mendoza, QB, Las Vegas Raiders (+550)

Kirk Cousins is going to start Week 1 for the Raiders, but we have a feeling Mendoza is going to come in earlier rather than later. And if he does, he won’t have to do much but win a few games to take this award. QBs have won eight of the last 16, including two of the last three.

Love is going to get a lot of snaps for the Cardinals, but with them likely to struggle even worse than Vegas, as a running back his impact could be limited. And let’s not forget he has Tyler Allgeier and eventually James Conner to contend with for carries.

A quarterback has to do a lot less to win these kinds of awards, so if Mendoza can come in some time in October and go something like 5-5, he can win this award. Justin Herbert went just 6-9 in 2020 and won it. Though he did throw for over 4,000 yards and 30+ TDs.

Long Short Dart Throw: Carson Beck, QB, Arizona Cardinals (+2,500)

In the same vein as our Mendoza pick, we like Beck because if something happens to Brissett, he becomes an instant favourite for this award. And even if something doesn’t happen to Brissett, the Cardinals could just decide midseason they want to kick the tires on Beck.

The Cardinals may be a bad team, but they’ve definitely got weapons that can make Beck look pretty good. At +2,500, it’s just a speculative bet, but we like the potential for the best case scenario.
