Carolina is 3-2 and atop the NFC South, while Tampa Bay arrives 1-5 and still unsettled at quarterback behind Baker Mayfield's thumb injury. For this week's NFL picks, few lines have moved less, since the market already prices in how shorthanded the Bucs are.

Carolina Panthers -3.5: -102

I like Carolina -3.5 here. The Panthers rank second in scoring averaging 29.2 ppg, well clear of a Buccaneers’ offence still finding its footing behind an uncertain quarterback situation. The Panthers beat the Bucs at home last season when they won the NFC South. Tampa Bay has more issues than just the QB situation, which is why Carolina is the pick to win and cover in their house. 

Chuba Hubbard Anytime Touchdown Scorer: -155

Hubbard has scored a rushing touchdown in three of Carolina's five games this season, including each of the last two, and his workload keeps climbing, up to 28 carries last week. With Carolina the likely team controlling the clock on Sunday, Hubbard will get a lot of carries again, and, again, punch one in for a TD.

The Carolina side

Bryce Young has been more than solid this season guiding a passing attack that ranks first in the league in passing yards per game. Carolina's defence is the weakness, 21st in points allowed at 24.6 ppg and 25th in yards allowed. However, but it has still been enough to win three of five and two in a row, including a 25-14 win at Philadelphia last week.

The Tampa Bay side

Baker Mayfield's status for Sunday is unresolved. He dislocated his throwing-hand thumb in Week 3, and has missed three straight games. He did practice on Wednesday,but is still listed as questionable. Rookie Jalon Daniels, who is 1-2 as a starter and  lost in overtime to Pittsburgh last week has been up and down but was decent in last week’s game. Whichever quarterback starts, the Buccaneers' offence still only ranks 25th in points per game. Mayfield is not the only injury issue as the top #1 RB Bucky Irvin and WR Emeka Egbuka are questionable and top safety Antoine Winfield Jr. is doubtful.

Bet365's moneyline odds of -182 on Carolina imply a de-vigged win probability of 62% for the Panthers against 38% for Tampa Bay. My own number sits a bit higher, 66%-34%, because I think the market hasn't fully separated these two quarterback situations for Tampa Bay with Mayfield questionable to go. I'm backing Carolina to cover the 3.5 points.

Hubbard has a good game running the rock and Young plays well against a Tampa Bay defence that ranks 17th in points allowed. The 27-17 win by Carolina makes them easily cover the spread while the total lands just under the posted total of 44.5 points.
