Padres vs Pirates Analysis

It hasn’t been a banner season for San Diego, but they’re very much in the thick of the National League Wild Card race, sitting in the third spot right now. While their bats have struggled for a lot of the year, they’ve come alive lately. San Diego has a 117 wRC+ across the last month, and ahead of Tuesday’s contest, has a 6-4 record in their last 10 contests. It’s crucial that the Padres keep their foot on the gas pedal, though, as numerous other ball clubs are right on their tails in the Wild Card standings.

Randy Vasquez gets the call in the finale, and he’s had a respectable campaign. The right-hander owns a 9-6 record and 4.20 ERA across 25 appearances, including 20 starts. Vasquez has helped San Diego stay in games lately, posting a 2.60 ERA over his previous five outings. They will need his best against a dangerous Pirates lineup, but they’ve been in poor shape lately, which plays in Vasquez’s favor.

Pittsburgh actually looked like they might finally end a long postseason drought earlier this season, but they’ve come back down to earth, and the playoffs are unlikely now. The Bucs are 7.5 games back in the Wild Card race and five games below .500 with a 64-69 record, as of this writing. Pittsburgh was just swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers before heading down the highway for this series with the Padres.

It won’t get any easier after leaving San Diego, either, as the Pirates head to Missouri to take on the St. Louis Cardinals. Bubba Chandler will be looking to contain the Padres on Wednesday as he makes his 26th appearance of the season. The right-hander sports a 6-8 record and 4.38 ERA, and he owns a 6.00 ERA over his last two outings.

Padres vs Pirates Betting Trends

  • Padres are 5-0 in their last five home games against teams with a losing record.
  • Padres are 4-0 in their last four games as a home favorite.
  • The Over is 4-0 in the Pirates’ last four games against teams with a losing record.
  • The Over is 6-2 in the Pirates’ last eight games against National League opponents.

Padres vs Pirates Picks

Vasquez has looked solid, and the Pirates are struggling immensely offensively with a 75 wRC+ over the last two weeks. With San Diego also in good form, I’ll take the hosts on the moneyline to win the series finale.
