Aston Villa vs Manchester City Analysis
Villa may be in Europa, but they’ve endured a difficult start to the Premier League season. Last year’s Champions League quarterfinalists are sitting in 11th place with a 3-3-2 record. While they’ve only conceded eight goals in as many games, the Lions have also scored only eight times. The club has really looked toothless in the final third, and that will need to change in a hurry. On a more positive note, the Villains have started to improve as of late.
Despite the defeat on Thursday, Unai Emery’s side had won five straight matches across all competitions before that. On matchday eight last weekend, Villa took down Tottenham. Morgan Rogers and Emi Buendia produced the goods to help their team grab three points, with Buendia bagging the winner in the 77th minute. The Lions will be hoping to get back to their winning ways on Sunday, but it won't be easy against a City outfit who are truly flourishing.
It’s common knowledge that last season was underwhelming for a club like Man City. They barely qualified for the Champions League, and the Sky Blues didn’t win a single trophy, losing in the FA Cup final to Crystal Palace. However, they had an impressive summer transfer window, and Erling Haaland’s world-class form has City firing on all cylinders early on. Pep Guardiola’s group is in second place in the Premier League table, compiling a 5-1-2 record. They’re just three points behind Arsenal, who are in top spot.
City is enjoying a nine-game unbeaten run across all competitions, winning seven of those matches. Haaland is absolutely dominating up top, already netting 11 goals in eight Premier League appearances. He’s truly been unstoppable, and the Norwegian will surely give Villa’s backline a fit on Sunday. Haaland scored both of City’s goals in the 2-0 victory over the Toffees last weekend at the Etihad.
Aston Villa vs Manchester City Injury News
Villa is relatively healthy for this game. Lucas Digne is expected to return from injury, while Youri Tielemans is still sidelined. Andres Garcia is also injured. As for City, they were dealt a scare when Nico Gonzalez had to exit early in the Champions League, but he’s expected to play on Sunday. Rodri remains out, while Abdukodir Khusanov is on the shelf with an ankle issue.
Aston Villa vs Manchester City Picks
Villa is starting to improve, but City is simply too strong right now. With Haaland scoring goals left and right, I don’t give the hosts much of a chance. Take the visitors to secure another three points.
