Chelsea sits at +149 odds here at soccer betting sites. The Magpies aren’t far behind with +175 odds on the moneyline. A draw is priced at +260.
The Magpies will be feeling confident here. They’ve beaten the Blues in back-to-back meetings, and both victories came at St. James’ Park. One was in the Premier League, and the other came in the Carabao Cup.
Newcastle vs Chelsea Analysis
The Magpies may be playing Champions League football right now, but if things don’t improve in a hurry, that will not be the case next season. Eddie Howe’s men are sitting in 12th spot with a 6-4-6 record, bagging just 21 goals so far while conceding 20. The absence of Alexander Isak has definitely hurt Newcastle’s attack, but Nick Woltemade has done a relatively decent job of replacing the Swede, netting five times in 13 Premier League outings.
On a more positive note, the Magpies are only five points behind Crystal Palace in fifth place. The standings are extremely tight at the moment, so a decent run of results can drastically move Newcastle up the table. Playing on home soil has undoubtedly been a strength for the Magpies, compiling a 5-1-2 record compared to 1-3-4 on the road. These next two games won’t be easy, though, with Manchester United up next after Chelsea heads to Tyneside.
The Blues have been up and down this term, but they’ve shown at times that contending for the title is a possibility. It remains in the cards as well, with Chelsea sitting eight points back of first-place Arsenal. That’s a big gap, but there’s also still boatloads of time left in the campaign. Enzo Maresca’s side is starting to find its form again, winning two straight games. Everton was a breeze last weekend before the Blues also beat Cardiff City mid-week in the Carabao Cup.
Those two victories ended a four-game winless run that included a disappointing Champions League defeat to Atalanta in Bergamo and a loss to newly-promoted Leeds United. Chelsea’s struggles against Newcastle are clear, but they cannot afford to drop more points here. As previously mentioned, minimal points is separating most of the table, so every single result matters. Chelsea has an identical 4-2-2 record at home and away.
Newcastle vs Chelsea Injury News
Dan Burn (rib), Nick Pope (groin), Kieran Trippier (hamstring), Sven Botman (back), William Osula (ankle), and Emil Krafth (knee) are all injured for the hosts. To make matters worse, Tino Livramento is also battling a health issue. As for Chelsea, they’re without Liam Delap (shoulder), Levi Colwill (knee), Romeo Lavia (thigh), and Dario Essugo (thigh). Young Brazilian Estevao is also unavailable due to a muscular problem.
Newcastle vs Chelsea Picks
I do not expect Newcastle to run riot on Chelsea as they have in past meetings. It should be a competitive clash, especially with the Blues starting to find more consistency. The Magpies are difficult to beat at St. James’ Park, though, so I’ll take each side to snatch a point.
