The Favorites

Micah Parsons, Edge, Dallas Cowboys (+700): This is an interesting choice for the bookmakers as our number one favorite for DPOY. Micah Parsons is currently embroiled in a contract dispute with the Dallas Cowboys that is getting dicier by the day. Parsons showed his respect for the club by showing up to many voluntary OTAs, but still, no positive news. Even with all of the posturing, we can’t imagine the Cowboys not giving Parsons what he’s looking for before the start of the season. And when/if they do, there’s a very recent precedent to suggest he might pop off.

In 2021, T.J. Watt held-in (he went to team activities but worked out on his own) and got his record-setting extension days before the season started. He responded with multiple sacks in Week 1 and went on to tie the single-season record with 22.5 sacks while winning DPOY that year. We’re not saying Parsons will tie or break any records, but we could see him having a similarly big year. It’s not often you see a favorite offering +700 odds value at Canadian sportsbooks.

Aidan Hutchinson, Edge, Detroit Lions (+750): The Lions’ best defensive player missed most of last year after fracturing his shin last year. He’s been good to go for a while, however. The Lions have added interesting pieces on defense, so Hutchinson does have a chance at this award, but he would probably have to record something like 18+ sacks. We’re not so sure about that.

Myles Garrett, Edge, Cleveland Browns (+750): The 2023 DPOY, Myles Garrett, is always among the favorites for this award. However, since 2004, there have only been two repeat winners for this award—J.J. Watt and Aaron Donald—and we don’t see Garrett on their level.

Long Shot Value Bets

  • Maxx Crosby, Edge, Las Vegas Raiders (+1,200): Maxx Crosby’s belief in the Raiders seems to have already paid dividends with the way they seem to be building. If Vegas is competitive, Crosby will be in the DPOY conversation, as he should have been during the last few years. He is arguably the best edge player in the league when it comes to both defending the run and rushing the passer.
  • Jalen Carter, DT, Philadelphia Eagles (+2,000): This is usually an edge rusher award now, but Jalen Carter has shown the ability to get to the QB from the defensive tackle spot that could peak the interest of voters. Now that the national media knows him better, they’ll be watching him more closely.
  • Fred Warner, MLB, San Francisco 49ers (+4,000): Since 1989, only two inside linebackers have won the DPOY award. Brian Urlacher, and Ray Lewis twice. Both of those legends could do it all on the field, putting up big tackle numbers, forcing turnovers in both the running and passing game, and rushing the passer. If anyone can end this 20-year drought, it’s Fred Warner.
