Golden Knights vs Hurricanes Game 5 Analysis
Vegas may have gone into this series as an underdog, but they’ve undoubtedly shown their quality in each and every game. The Golden Knights simply got hot at the right time and have managed to give a Hurricanes team that appears stronger on paper a serious run for its money. John Tortorella’s squad was right with Carolina in Game 4 at home, heading into the third period in a 3-3 deadlock after overcoming a two-goal deficit in the second period.
But Vegas was sloppy at times in the final frame, and it cost them. Jordan Staal scored the winner before a lucky bounce trickled all the way down the ice and into the Golden Knights’ empty net to seal the deal for the visitors. While Vegas certainly had their fair share of chances in the third, they couldn’t get the job done. Now, Vegas faces a crucial Game 5 in Raleigh. A victory would put the Golden Knights in position to potentially close out the series on home ice in Game 6.
Teams rarely overcome a 3-1 deficit in the Stanley Cup Final. Carolina was surely aware of that heading into Tuesday’s tilt in Vegas, and they knew the only acceptable outcome was a victory. Just like we've seen several times already in this series, one team grabbed an early lead before the other battled back. The Hurricanes saw their 3-1 lead vanish in the second period, but it was their veteran who came to the rescue.
Staal scored his Stanley Cup-leading fifth goal of the series, and his second of the game to put Carolina ahead for good. It was a gritty goal as well, putting the puck in the back of the net while lying on the ice. Brandon Bussi got the first playoff start of his career in goal, and he was impressive in place of No. 1 Frederik Andersen, who was a healthy scratch after his struggles earlier in the series. The home atmosphere is definitely a positive for the Canes, but they need to be ready for Vegas to come out with tons of intensity here.
Golden Knights vs Hurricanes Game 5 Picks
I’ve been hammering the Over as my pick for a lot of this series, and it’s far too good to pass up once again here. Goaltending has not been the storyline in the Finals, and both of these clubs have so many offensive weapons who can change the game in an instant. We’ll see another high-scoring affair on Thursday.
