Kansas City opened as a touchdown-plus favourite and Bet365 still has the Chiefs at -8.5 against a winless Chargers team. Among the NFL picks Week 6 slate, Kansas City's 4-0 start against Los Angeles' 0-5 record makes it no surprise KC is such a big home betting favourite. It is not only the offenses of these division rivals that makes the gap so big, as the Chiefs rank seventh in the league in points allowed while the Chargers only rank tied for 22nd.

Kansas City Chiefs -8.5: -103

I'm backing Kansas City to cover here. Not only are they playing well on both sides of the ball but they are rested coming off a bye.They are averaging nearly 30 ppg and go against a Bolts’ offence that ranks third-to-last in the NFL averaging just 16.8 ppg. The Chargers have won the last two meetings between these teams, a 27-21 win in Brazil and a 16-13 result at Arrowhead last December without Patrick Mahomes. However, this season the Chiefs are cooking and the Chargers are winless and, by far, the most disappointing team so far this season.

The Kansas City side

Patrick Mahomes has bounced back from an injury that cost him much of last season and newcomer Kenneth Walker III has been a huge addition and ranks second in the league in rushing yards. WR Rashee Rice is out but Mahomes still has weapons in a balanced offence that ranks in the top nine in passing and rushing yards per game. 

The Chiefs have outscored opponents 118-77 across four games, with wins over Denver, Indianapolis, Miami and Las Vegas before the bye, and the offence has not scored fewer than 24 points in any of those four games. That weekly floor against a Chargers defence allowing 25.8 points a game is exactly why the spread sits where it does.

The Los Angeles side

Justin Herbert has not looked good, only ranks 23rd in QBR and he has more picks (7) than TDs (5). On top of that The Chargers have a banged-up WR corps and will be without their top pass-catcher in Tre’ Harris. Los Angeles is 0-5 and has not topped 23 points in any game this season, a run of form that makes covering a number this size a genuine stretch for an offence ranked 25th in the league in total yards and 30th in scoring.

Bet365's moneyline of -476 on Kansas City implies a de-vigged win probability of 79% against 21% for Los Angeles. I'd put it a little higher, around 82% to 18%, because the market still treats these teams as closer than their scoring margins this season: Kansas City is plus-10.2 a game and Los Angeles is minus-9.0, nearly a 20-point swing. I think the market is paying some respect to the Chargers' two recent head-to-head wins over Kansas City, but that history hasn't shown up in Los Angeles' results this year.

I'm calling this one Kansas City 30, Los Angeles 17. The Chiefs have scored at least 24 points in every game this season, and a Chargers’ defence already surrendering 25.8 ppg make this a lopsided affair. Los Angeles has not cracked 24 points in five tries, and will not do so in this game. The combined total of 47 points clears the posted 42.5 points with room to spare, and a 13-point margin covers the Chiefs number covering the spread.
