Detroit heads to Hard Rock Stadium on a three-game winning streak, capped by last week's 19-15 win over Minnesota. With the Lions sitting at 5-2 and Miami at 1-6, the scoring gap between these two offences, detailed below, is the main driver of this week's NFL picks Week 9 line. The Lions have the scoring and the Dolphins look to thwart that in what will be a tall task in this non-conference game.

Detroit Lions -6.5: -123

My call is Detroit -6.5. The Lions have won three straight, doing it with the NFL's third-highest scoring offence at 29 ppg, against a Miami defence allowing 25.9 ppg, tied for 24th in the league. Miami's only win this season came against a Jets team that is 2-6 itself, and the Dolphins have topped 20 points just twice all year. I think the market is underpricing that scoring gap, which is why I expect Detroit to cover even on the road.

The Detroit side

The Detroit side comes in with real balance. Jared Goff directs the attack with Jahmyr Gibbs and Amon-Ra St. Brown as the top skill-position threats, and that offence has carried Detroit through a solid run that continued in their last game in a 19-15 win over the Minnesota Vikings handing them their first loss of the season. The defence has quietly been the bigger story, allowing just 21, 17 and 15 points over its last three games, a sharp improvement from a season mark that still sits 18th overall at 25.7 ppg. Goff and a legit offence with an improving defence is why I like Detroit to cover. 

The Miami side

The Miami side is still searching for answers at 1-6, with the league's 31st-ranked offence at 16.7 ppg. Miami has scored 24, 28 and 19 points over its last three games, well above that season rate, but none of it came against a defence playing like Detroit's has this past month. Miami's defence, tied for 24th in points allowed, is the more competent of the Dolphins' two units, which is still not saying much.

Detroit's -345 moneyline at Bet365 de-vigs to 74% against 26% for Miami. I put the Lions a touch higher, at 76%, since that scoring edge should turn into wins more often than the market implies, though the gap is small enough that the moneyline itself is priced close to fair. Where I see real separation is in the margin, which is why the spread is my pick over the straight moneyline bet.

I'm calling this one Detroit 27, Miami 16. The Lions should move the ball early against a Dolphins defence that still ranks in the bottom third of the league, while Detroit's defence, in the middle of its best three-game stretch of the season, is the new factor that keeps Miami's recent scoring uptick in check. An 11-point margin clears the 6.5 spread, and the combined 43 points lands 7.5 points under the 50.5 total.
