The NHL's highest-scoring offence is about to meet its leakiest defence. Edmonton averages 4.12 goals per game. Vancouver allows 4.61. And if the Canucks were hoping their penalty kill might help contain the damage, its 63.3% success rate ranks 31st against an Oilers power play converting at 33.9%.

Edmonton (11-3-3) has lost two straight, but Vancouver (3-14-1) arrives with four consecutive regulation defeats and a defensive record that makes those Oilers losses look like a relatively minor concern.

The sportsbooks aren't expecting much of an upset. bet365 has Edmonton at -333, with the total sitting at 6.5 goals. But there's a difference between identifying the likely winner and finding a worthwhile bet. At Over 6.5 (-145), we're more interested in how many goals this matchup might produce than which team finishes with the two points.

Canucks vs Oilers Best Bet

Over 6.5 Goals: -145

Edmonton has several ways to exploit Vancouver's defensive problems, particularly if the Canucks continue struggling on the penalty kill. But an obvious scoring mismatch doesn't automatically make the over a good bet. The question is whether the market has already charged too much for that expectation.

Our scoring model gives Over 6.5 a 64.3% probability, compared with the market's margin-free estimate of 56.8%. Blending the two produces our final projection of 60.5%, just above the 59.2% break-even requirement at -145.

That leaves an edge of approximately 1.3 percentage points. It's enough to qualify under our betting criteria, but hardly an invitation to chase a worse number. Edmonton has played 17 games and Vancouver 18, so those eye-catching scoring averages still come with early-season uncertainty.

We're backing Over 6.5 at -145 or better. Seven combined goals get us there, including any additional goal awarded through overtime or a shootout. At the current price, the bet qualifies. If the odds shorten, the value disappears.

Oilers vs Canucks Analysis

Edmonton Oilers

Edmonton has lost two straight, but scoring hasn't been the problem. The Oilers scored three times in a shootout loss to New Jersey and put four past Anaheim, only to lose both games. They've still won three of their last five, and their league-leading 4.12 goals per game suggests the recent defeats are hardly evidence of a scoring slump.

The other side of that equation matters for our total. Edmonton allows 3.00 goals per game (tied for 12th), and 10 of its first 17 contests have cleared 6.5 goals. The Oilers don't necessarily need Vancouver to keep pace with them, but their own defensive record leaves room for the Canucks to contribute.

Special teams could widen the gap further. Vancouver's struggling penalty kill gives Edmonton another potential scoring route, although that advantage depends on how many opportunities the Oilers receive.

Edmonton Oilers Projected Lineup

  • Starting goalie: Unconfirmed. Daily Faceoff lists Tristan Jarry first, but CBS Sports reports an illness that could affect his availability. Matt Tomkins is another potential starter.
  • Recent goalie starts: Tomkins started Nov. 1 and Nov. 5; Jarry started Nov. 3.
  • Forwards: V. Podkolzin, C. McDavid, L. Draisaitl, C. Dach, R. Nugent-Hopkins, K. Kapanen, A. Formenton, J. Dickinson, M. Joseph, M. Jones, O. Michaels, F. Hallander
  • Defence: M. Ekholm, E. Bouchard, R. Shea, C. Murphy, S. Mukhamadullin, J. Walman

Injuries and Availability

  • Tristan Jarry: Illness; CBS Sports lists him out until at least Nov. 7 (updated Nov. 5).
  • Zach Hyman: Injured reserve (neck); listed out until at least Nov. 7 (CBS Sports, updated Nov. 3).
  • Isaac Howard: Injured reserve (knee); listed out until at least Nov. 17. NHL.com reported the move Nov. 5, although Daily Faceoff still lists him as day-to-day.
  • Matthew Savoie: Injured reserve (lower body); listed out until at least Nov. 24 (CBS Sports, updated Oct. 1).
  • Alec Regula: Injured reserve; listed out until at least Nov. 21 (CBS Sports, updated Oct. 24).

Roster Update

  • Brett Epp: Activated as Edmonton's emergency backup goaltender for Nov. 5 while Tristan Jarry was unavailable due to illness.

With Jarry's availability uncertain, Edmonton's starting goalie remains worth checking before puck drop.

Projected skaters are based on Daily Faceoff's Nov. 6 update and Edmonton's Nov. 5 game. Injury information comes from CBS Sports and Daily Faceoff; the roster update is attributed to NHL.com.

Vancouver Canucks

Vancouver's defensive problems are difficult to disguise. The Canucks allow an NHL-worst 4.61 goals per game, and opponents have scored at least four in four of their last five contests. They've won just once during that stretch, needing six goals to escape Anaheim with a 6-5 overtime victory on Oct. 27.

The offence hasn't provided much of a safety net. Vancouver averages 2.94 goals per game (22nd), creating a sizeable gap between what the Canucks score and what they surrender. Yet only nine of their first 18 games have cleared 6.5 goals. A struggling defence doesn't automatically produce a winning over bet, particularly when the team on the other side of the scoreboard isn't consistently contributing.

Vancouver isn't entirely without ways to contribute. Its power play converts at 21.4% (17th), while Edmonton's penalty kill ranks 21st at 74.1%. That's a less dramatic mismatch than the one facing Vancouver's own penalty kill, but it gives the Canucks a possible scoring avenue beyond even-strength play.

Vancouver Canucks Projected Lineup

  • Starting goalie: Unconfirmed. Daily Faceoff lists Leevi Meriläinen first, with Kevin Lankinen another potential starter.
  • Recent goalie starts: Meriläinen started Oct. 31 and Nov. 5; Lankinen started Nov. 3.
  • Forwards: J. DeBrusk, E. Pettersson, B. Boeser, L. Ohgren, M. Rossi, J. Lekkerimäki, D. O'Connor, J. Quillan, L. Karlsson, P. Cotter, M. Sasson, B. Gallagher
  • Defence: E. Pettersson, F. Hronek, J. Oleksiak, Z. Buium, G. Brisebois, V. Mancini

Injuries and Availability

  • Tom Willander: Day-to-day with a lower-body injury; availability for Nov. 7 remains uncertain.
  • Filip Chytil: Injured reserve (upper body); listed out until at least Nov. 9 (CBS Sports, updated Nov. 3).
  • Thatcher Demko: Injured reserve (hip); listed out until at least Dec. 21 (CBS Sports, updated Sept. 28).

Vancouver's starter also remains unconfirmed, an important consideration against the NHL's highest-scoring offence.

Projected skaters are based on Daily Faceoff's Nov. 4 update and Vancouver's Nov. 5 game. Injury and availability information is attributed to CBS Sports and Daily Faceoff. Lines and starting goalies are subject to change.

Each team's score appears first in the tables, with the deciding shootout goal included where applicable. Goals-per-game averages and shot statistics cover regulation and overtime only, while over/under records account for the additional goal awarded to the shootout winner.

Edmonton is the clear favourite, but the moneyline offers little reason to get involved. Once the sportsbook's margin is removed, the market gives the Oilers a 73.7% chance of winning, compared with our final estimate of 72.3%. That's a slight disagreement, not a meaningful pricing opportunity, and neither moneyline meets our betting criteria.

The puck line makes things more interesting. Vancouver +1.5 at +113 shows an estimated edge of approximately 1.6 percentage points, slightly higher than the 1.3-point edge on Over 6.5. Both qualify under our minimum threshold, but our one-bet-per-game approach leaves us backing the over. The offensive and special-teams mismatches give us a clearer matchup-based argument for goals, even if the numerical edge is marginally smaller.

Goals haven't exactly been hard to come by when these teams meet. Edmonton has won six of nine against Vancouver since the start of 2024-25, with six of those games clearing 6.5 goals. Their two meetings this season produced 11 and 16 goals, respectively. Those are striking results, but nine head-to-head games aren't enough to establish a reliable scoring trend, especially when the current matchup already provides stronger evidence.

Exact Score Prediction: Oilers 4, Canucks 3

Edmonton has the offensive firepower to take control of this matchup, and Vancouver's defensive struggles offer little reason to expect an easy night for the Canucks. The question isn't whether the Oilers can score. It's whether Vancouver can contribute enough to turn an Edmonton advantage into a seven-goal game.

Our model projects 4.38 goals for Edmonton and 2.99 for Vancouver, an expected total of 7.37. An Oilers 4-2 victory is the model's most likely winning scoreline at 4.3%, but 4-3 is separated by just hundredths of a percentage point. We're taking the latter as our final prediction, with Vancouver's potential to contribute against Edmonton's 21st-ranked penalty kill helping make that score plausible.

Vancouver has cleared 6.5 in only half its games, so this isn't a risk-free scoring environment. But our blended 60.5% probability still clears the break-even requirement at -145. It's a narrow edge, and one we're unwilling to chase beyond that price.

Edmonton is the obvious favourite. The moneyline makes sure we pay for knowing it. The total offers a narrower, but more interesting opportunity: backing the scoring environment rather than paying a premium for the team most people already expect to win.
