Major Risers & Fallers
The biggest mover from just after the Super Bowl to just after the draft was the Los Angeles Rams, who saw their odds plummet from +3,000 to +2,000 on the day after the draft. Without a first round pick for the millionth year in a row, the drop was not because of their draft class, which seems decent enough, but rather that they were able to tie QB Matthew Stafford down, as he seemed like he might depart back in February.
The Bengals also saw their odds from +2,200 to +1,800, likely largely due to their ability to lock up both of their Pro Bowl receivers on long-term deals. Meanwhile, the odds for the Vikings and Bears both dropped by 500 thanks to shrewd moves both in free agency and the draft. While the oddsmakers obviously like the Chargers’ first round pick of RB Omarion Hampton, as their odds fell from +2,800 to +2,500 as well.
Going the other way, the 49ers saw their odds rise from +1,100 to +1,600, an indication that oddsmakers do not like this roster as much as they did before free agency. During that period, the 49ers saw a litany of crucial defensive players leave, and though they did a good job of addressing those in the draft, it remains to be seen how the youngsters will turn out.
The Packers’ odds (+1,900 to +2,200) also rose significantly, though they didn’t do anything especially notable in free agency or the draft, so we’re not sure why NFL betting sites made that move. Perhaps less belief in Jordan Love? We wouldn’t agree if that was the case. The Texans odds (+3,000 to +3,500) also saw a huge jump, which probably has to do with one of the worst offensive lines in football trading away two of their only quality linemen.
Early Super Bowl 60 Favorites & Long Shots
Meanwhile, the defending champion Eagles are now alone at the top at +650, and they really should be. They didn’t lose much in free agency and they had a solid draft to boot. The Chiefs, meanwhile, dropped from +650 to +700, as it seemed they needed to make some major moves to fix some issues on the offensive line and elsewhere, and didn’t sufficiently do so.
The Bills and Ravens, ever in K.C.’s shadow, stayed static at +700. The only other team below +1,000 was the Detroit Lions, whose odds dropped from +900 to +850. If you’re looking to make a bet that you really hope to win, a bet on one of those five teams would be smart right now, as those odds will shorten significantly by preseason.
If you’re looking for a long shot, you want a high risk high reward proposition. If you believe Aaron Rodgers is going to sign with the Steelers and rediscover his Hall of Fame form, Pittsburgh’s +4,000 odds are pretty enticing. All of the moves the Bears have made to shore up the offensive line also makes them a very intriguing prospect at +3,500 with all of the skill position talent already on hand.
