The MLB trade deadline was an active one, with numerous contenders across the big leagues making moves to strengthen their pursuit of a deep playoff run. In the American League West, we saw a lot of activity from the Houston Astros, Seattle Mariners, and the Texas Rangers, who are all battling it out for the divisional crown. We’ll take a look at the latest futures below.

Highlights

  • The Houston Astros are the frontrunner in the AL West futures after the trade deadline

2025 AL West Futures: Outright Winner

TeamOdds
Astros-130
Mariners+160
Rangers+550
Angels+20000
Athletics+50000

The Astros are the frontrunner with -130 odds, while the M’s have +160 odds at most MLB betting sites. The Rangers at +550 can’t be counted out, either.

Astros (-130)

Houston has a 2.5-game lead at the top of the American League West with a 62-50 record and made some interesting moves on deadline day. They traded for Jesus Sanchez, Ramon Urias, and most notably, Carlos Correa. The Astros shockingly reunited with their former shortstop in a move that nobody saw coming. While Correa was struggling this year with the Minnesota Twins, returning to where it all began for him in the Majors may be a huge positive for the former Gold Glove winner. Injuries have still hurt Houston this season, but they’ve managed to get by overall. Correa will play third for the Astros, while Jeremy Pena, who just returned, will continue to occupy shortstop. He was having an MVP-caliber campaign before going on the shelf. Yordan Alvarez is also expected to return in mid-August. Houston is in good shape.

Mariners (+160)

Seattle’s fanbase wasn’t happy last offseason due to the lack of free agent signings. Well, the front office has made up for it. The deadline saw the Mariners add two of the most highly-coveted players available in Josh Naylor and Eugenio Suarez, who both came over from the Arizona Diamondbacks, who decided to sell. Suarez used to play for the M’s and brings serious power to the table and good defense. Naylor was also having a nice offensive year and gives Seattle more pop in the heart of their lineup. It would be a shame for the Mariners to waste Cal Raleigh’s historic season. The M’s’ rotation is finally healthy as well and has all the talent in the world. They have every chance at winning this division and even making a World Series run.

Rangers (+550)

Sitting in third in the AL West with a 58-55 record, Texas is in the mix as well. Their World Series hangover was real last season but as we know, this roster has the experience to make noise in the playoffs, if they get there. The Rangers traded for Merrill Kelly at the deadline, one of the best starters in the sport who should immediately strengthen the rotation. Despite their offensive struggles, Texas is trusting their lineup to find some consistency and focused on adding pitching instead, also trading for a pair of relievers. I don’t see them winning the AL West, but a Wild Card spot is possible.

AL West Futures Picks

The AL West crown is going to come down to the wire and it will be between the Astros and Mariners. There’s minimal games separating the two and they’re both a lot better after the deadline. I’d put money down on both at this point.
