The Boston Red Sox hit the road on Monday, July 21, for the beginning of a three-game set with the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. The first pitch for the series opener is scheduled for 6:45 PM ET. Boston just lost two of three to the Chicago Cubs over the weekend, but they did win the rubber match on Sunday by a score of 6-1. Red Sox vs Phillies Odds

The Phils are a heavy -200 favorite for the series opener on Monday, while the Red Sox return as a +165 underdog at MLB betting sites.

These two ball clubs have met six times in the last two seasons, with Boston winning four of those games.

Red Sox vs Phillies Analysis

It’s been an interesting season for the Red Sox. They traded franchise star Rafael Devers last month to the San Francisco Giants, a deal that shook the entire baseball world. While the early returns after parting ways with Devers weren’t great, Boston has started to improve lately. They had a 10-game winning streak heading into the All-Star break before the Cubbies beat them on Friday in the first game of the second half. The Red Sox managed to salvage a victory in the series on Sunday though behind an impressive outing from their ace, Garrett Crochet.

The southpaw tossed six innings of one-run baseball against a solid Chicago offense. At the dish, Wilyer Abreu led the way with two home runs, while rookie Roman Anthony also had a pair of hits. On Monday, the Red Sox turn to Buehler, who has struggled this year. The right-hander owns a 6-6 record and 6.12 ERA in 16 starts, with opponents hitting .282. Philly’s lineup is batting .233 against him across 60 at-bats. Buehler has pitched better as of late, compiling a 4.09 ERA in July so far.

The Phillies remain at the top of the National League East with a 56-43 record, but the New York Mets are breathing right down their necks, just a half game behind them as we speak. Philadelphia’s struggles over the weekend against the Angels allowed their divisional rivals to gain ground. On a more positive note, Rob Thomson’s squad has been much better at home this season, posting a 31-18 record. They’re just .500 on the road. This series versus Boston is a chance to get back on track and hopefully strengthen their lead at the top of the division.

Philly will certainly be confident in who is taking the hill on Monday. Wheeler has been their ace all year long, going 9-3 with a 2.36 ERA in 19 starts. He’s struck out 154 hitters in 122 innings of work while walking just 26. Opponents are also hitting only .181. Wheeler is absolutely lights out on a consistent basis and his ERA is even better at Citizens Bank Park, lowering to 1.91. The Red Sox will have their work cut out for them here. Boston’s lineup is hitting just .211 against him in 38 at-bats.

Red Sox vs Phillies Picks

Wheeler is just far too dominant to bet against and as you can see, he’s practically unhittable at home. I’ll take the Phillies to win the series opener and also do some damage versus Buehler, who is rarely finding any success nowadays. Lock in the Philadelphia moneyline.
