The Yankees head into the series opener as a heavy -165 favorite. The Twins return as a +140 underdog at MLB betting sites.
This is the first time these two teams will meet this season, but it’s been all New York since 2023. They’ve won seven in a row against Minnesota.
Twins vs Yankees Analysis
The Twins enter this series with an impressive two wins in three against Kansas City but still face an uphill climb in the playoff race. Minnesota is fourth in the American League Central at 56-61, 11.5 games out of first place. The Wild Card is also a challenge — they trail the Boston Red Sox and Seattle Mariners by 5.5 games for the top two spots. A series win against the Yankees could help close the gap and build confidence for the final stretch.
Zebby Matthews, 25, takes the mound for Minnesota in the opener. The rookie right-hander is 3-3 with a 5.17 ERA through eight starts. Matthews is coming off one of his best outings, throwing five innings of one-run baseball against the Detroit Tigers with six strikeouts. This will be his first career appearance against the Yankees, adding another test to his debut season.
The Yankees have hit a rough patch, going 3-7 over their last 10 games. They are six games behind the first-place Toronto Blue Jays in the AL East and three games behind the Red Sox. New York was aggressive at the trade deadline, but the new additions have yet to make a major impact. Still, the Yankees are 35-24 at home, and returning to Yankee Stadium could be exactly what they need to snap out of their skid. Aaron Judge has also yet to go deep since returning from the IL.
Manager Aaron Boone gives the ball to Will Warren, who is 6-5 with a 4.44 ERA across 24 starts. The right-hander has struck out 133 batters over 115 2/3 innings while holding opponents to a .246 average. Like Matthews, Warren has never faced this opponent. He has been sharp lately, allowing just three earned runs over his last three starts, including five scoreless innings against the Texas Rangers last week. His 2.88 ERA at home this season has been a major bright spot for New York’s rotation.
Twins vs. Yankees Picks
Warren’s strong home numbers and the Yankees’ recent dominance over the Twins make New York the safer play here. If the offense provides early run support, the Yankees should be in a good position to take the opener and regain momentum.
