We’re two months into the 2025 MLB season and while the MVP frontrunners are very clearly Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani, the Cy Young race, especially in the National League, remains tight. Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes continues to dominate and has a real chance at taking home the award, but Los Angeles Dodgers righty Yoshinobu Yamamoto is also making his case. Below, we’ll dive into the NL Cy Young futures and discuss a handful of contenders.

Skenes is a +140 favorite at MLB betting sites. Yamamoto is on his heels, while Zack Wheeler is in the mix as well.
Paul Skenes (+140)
It didn’t take long for Skenes to make his MLB debut, coming up last May and instantly showing his brilliance. The right-hander went 11-3 with a stellar 1.96 ERA in 23 starts en route to winning the NL Rookie of the Year. Skenes also finished third in Cy Young voting as a rookie and started the All-Star Game. The LSU product is in a league of his own, and the numbers are solid in ‘25 as well.
Skenes is 4-5 with a 2.15 ERA so far, striking out 77 hitters in 75.1 innings of work while walking just 18. While his record doesn’t look great due to a lack of help from the Bucs’ offense, Skenes is a star. He’s going to win a Cy Young sooner rather than later, and it could be this year.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto (+275)
Yamamoto was impressive throughout ‘24, but he’s been even better so far this season for the Dodgers. The right-hander has made 12 starts, compiling a 6-4 record and 2.39 ERA, striking out 77 in 67.2 frames while walking 23 batters. The Japanese phenom hasn’t given up more than five earned runs in a single outing this year. With Los Angeles dealing with so many pitching injuries, his consistency has been huge for the defending World Series champions. Yamamoto will undoubtedly be in the Cy Young running as long as he keeps throwing the ball well.
Zack Wheeler (+600)
Wheeler has never actually won a Cy Young, but he’s finished as a runner-up twice. That was the case last year as the 35-year-old posted a 16-7 record and 2.57 ERA in 32 starts. Wheeler is one of the best in the big leagues at his craft, and he’s performing again in ‘25, going 6-2 with a 2.96 ERA. The veteran has struck out 94 in only 76 innings. Wheeler has serious swing and miss stuff. He’ll have a difficult time beating out Skenes and Yamamoto for the Cy Young, but Wheeler has the experience, and he’s been very dominant.
Hunter Greene (+1200)
Hunter Greene was the second overall pick in the 2017 MLB Draft, and there was no question he’d one day be a star in the big leagues. With a fastball that regularly touches triple digits, Greene is electric. While he’s struggled with command at times, the youngster started to kick it into another gear last year. He was 9-5 with a 2.75 ERA, finishing eighth in Cy Young voting. As for this season, Greene has gone 4-3 while collecting a 2.63 ERA in 10 starts. He’s improved his control immensely with only 11 free passes in 54.2 innings while striking out 66.
Chris Sale (+2000)
While Chris Sale has long +2000 odds, he is the reigning NL Cy Young winner. The southpaw ran through every opponent last year, going 18-3 with a 2.38 ERA. Sale also posted 225 Ks in 177.2 frames. Sale is doing his thing in ‘25, posting a 3-3 record and 3.03 ERA. Not as lights out as a year ago, but still very solid. That being said, it does feel unlikely he’s going to take home another Cy Young with the aforementioned names all pitching better.
NL Cy Young Picks
There is a lot of time left in the campaign and things can change. However, Skenes has shown that he is truly elite and I don’t see him struggling for any long period of time. A bad start here and there, sure. But, overall, he will continue to be consistent. I also like Yamamoto, though, and he’s had the opportunity to really step up and be the Dodgers’ ace. Put money down on both while there’s still plus odds.
