Philadelphia has lost three in a row since an encouraging 2-1 start, a slide our Week 5 Eagles coverage already walked through, while Carolina enters off a bye that leaves it fresher after an inconsistent first month. The Panthers have swung from blowout wins to blowout losses, and that volatility against a tighter Eagles team at home is why this line sits inside two points. However, they are rested and facing a backup QB, which is why they are the road favourite in the City of Brotherly Love.

Philadelphia Eagles +1.5: -116

I'm backing the Eagles to cover getting a point and a half at home. Philadelphia has dropped three straight, but two of those losses came by a combined six points, 20-24 to the Rams and 17-19 to Jacksonville, hardly a team coming apart. Carolina has lived by the sword all season, routing Atlanta 34-3 one week and getting outscored 59-37 by Chicago in another. I think the market is pricing Carolina's scoring average higher than its defensive performance deserves, and getting the home team for next to nothing closes that gap.

The Philadelphia side

Philadelphia is 2-3 and mired in a three-game slide, averaging just 18.4 ppg, 29th in the league, though the defence has held up better than its yardage suggests at 22.4 points allowed, 14th, despite ranking 24th in yards surrendered. Saquon Barkley is questionable and with Hurts out Tanner McKee will get the start under center. Still, he has played pretty well in limited action and will be facing a suspect Carolina defence. 

The Carolina side

Carolina is 2-2 after an idle Week 5, averaging a healthy 30.3 ppg but allowing 27.3 ppg, a defence ranked 29th in the league at 387.3 yards surrendered. Derrick Brown, the team's top interior lineman, has been on season-ending injured reserve since the spring, a hole up front that has shown against the run all year. Bryce Young has been pretty solid under center but the run game has been up and down ranking 18th in the league in rushing yards per game. However, their defence is why I cannot back them this Sunday.

Carolina's -116 price on Bet365 implies a de-vigged win probability of 51% against 49% for Philadelphia. My own number is 53% Philadelphia, 47% Carolina: the Eagles' skid has stayed within a score twice, while Carolina's results have swung from a 34-point rout to a 22-point collapse in the same month. That four-point split tells me oddsmakers are pricing Carolina's scoring average more than its own inconsistency.

My call is Philadelphia 23, Carolina 20. McKee plays well and the Eagles find a way to win at home. Philadelphia's defence has held two of its last four opponents to 20 points or fewer, and I expect a similar number here even with Carolina moving the ball in stretches. That score clears the 39.5 total, so the Over and the Eagles at plus 1.5 both cash the same way. Three one-score finishes already this season tell me Philadelphia is closer to .500 than its record shows.
