New York Jets vs Las Vegas Raiders Best Odds

Odds courtesy of Bet365, correct at time of writing and subject to change.

Four straight losses by a combined 48 points have dropped Las Vegas to 3-4, and the Raiders now travel east to face a Jets team that has had troubles on the offensive side of the ball but has a good defence.  New York is 2-5, but four of those five losses came by one score, including last week's 28-25 defeat to Miami. Las Vegas has allowed 35.8 ppg across that four-game skid, and that number is the real story among this week's NFL picks.

New York Jets vs Las Vegas Raiders Best Bet

New York Jets -1.5: -110

I'm backing the Jets to win and cover at home. New York's defence has allowed 21.4 ppg across seven games, and it now faces a Raiders’ offence that managed only 21 points last week against the Rams. Geno Smith and the Jets only rank 27th in the league averaging 19.6 ppg but will be facing a Raiders’ defence that has given up at least 30 points in each of their last four games. The Raiders three wins have come facing teams that have a combined record of 3-16.

New York Jets vs Las Vegas Raiders Analysis

The New York side

New York is 2-5, but it's not as bad as the record suggests. The Jets have been outscored by just 13 points total across seven games, averaging 19.6 ppg while allowing 21.4 ppg, numbers that support the pick here. Geno Smith has given the offence a steadier hand since arriving from Las Vegas in a March trade and while he has not put up big numbers he has limited mistakes and only has two INT. The ground game may be an issue, as the top two running backs in Braelon Allen and Breece Hall are both listed as questionable.

The Las Vegas side

Las Vegas has lost four straight, and the problem has mostly been on defence: the Raiders have conceded 35.8 ppg over that stretch, well above their 28.1 ppg mark for the season. Kirk Cousins has played well in the pass game but has not gotten much help from the run game, as Las Vegas ranks second-to-last in the NFL in rushing yards per game. It's now four straight losses, including a  35-21 loss to the Rams last week, and nothing here suggests the defence turns it around facing the Jets.

New York Jets vs Las Vegas Raiders Prediction

Based on Bet365's moneyline, the de-vigged market gives New York a 53% implied win probability against 47% for Las Vegas. I have the Jets a little higher, at 58%, because the market's number doesn't yet seem to fully reflect how bad the Raiders' defence has played over the past month. A short spread for the home team playing a bad defence is why the Jets are the pick to win and cover.

My Exact Score Prediction: New York Jets 27-20 Las Vegas Raiders

I'm predicting a 27-20 New York win. Four of New York's five losses this season have come by one score, a sign this roster competes even when it falls short. The combined total of 47 clears the 45.5 line, and the seven-point margin covers the 1.5-point spread.
