Detroit Lions vs Green Bay Packers: NFL Predictions, Odds & Picks | Week 7

Detroit is 3-2 and fresh off a Week 6 bye, hosting a Green Bay team that arrives at 4-2 on a three-game winning streak. The Lions have scored 32.8 ppg, second in the league, but their own defence ranks 30th at 29.6 ppg allowed, a contrast that's central to my NFL prediction Week 7 call on this spread taking the O over the D.

Detroit Lions -3.5: -105

I'm backing Detroit to cover at home. Green Bay's defence already ranks in the league's top ten, but it hasn't faced an offence quite this explosive, and Detroit gets the extra rest off its bye. Green Bay has won both meetings between these teams over the last year, though this year's Lions attack operates at a different level than the one that lost those games. My one hesitation is Detroit's own leaky defence, but at home with Goff and company Detroit is the pick.

The Detroit side

Detroit is 3-2 after five games, were there two losses were against the over .500 teams of Carolina and Buffalo. Jared Goff directs an attack built around Jahmyr Gibbs and Amon-Ra St. Brown that has carried the league's second-best scoring rate into the bye. The flip side is a defence that ranks 30th in the league, which is why I don't expect a low-scoring game in the Motor City. 

The Green Bay side

Green Bay is 4-2 after six games, the latest a 23-13 decision over Dallas to cap a three-game win streak. Jordan Love runs an offence that ranks 23rd at 21.2 ppg, but Green Bay's defence is the strength here, 10th at 20.8 ppg allowed. Still even with star RB Josh Jacobs back I don’t see the Packers’ defense holding the Lions high-scoring offence in check.

The Lions moneyline odds of -182 on Bet365 imply a de-vigged win probability of 62% for Detroit against 38% for Green Bay. My own number sits lower on the Lions, around 59%, because I think the market is leaning too heavily on raw scoring totals and not enough on a Green Bay offence that has scored 20 or more points in three of its last five games.Evenwith the Detroit D, It's a real but modest gap, which is why my pick stays on the spread for Detroit rather than the moneyline.

I'm backing Detroit to win a game closer than the gap between these offences suggests. Jahmyr Gibbs and Amon-Ra St. Brown should find room against a Green Bay defence that hasn't faced this much skill-position talent all season, while Jordan Love and Josh Jacobs keep Detroit's leaky defence honest. The total of 52 lands a shade under the posted 53.5, in a game I don't expect to turn into a shootout. Detroit's extra rest off the bye and their offence are the deciding factors behind the Lions covering.
