Seattle Seahawks vs Arizona Cardinals: NFL Predictions, Odds & Picks | Week 9

Arizona snapped a two-game skid with an overtime win over Dallas last week, a game that doubled as Gardner Minshew's audition after he relieved a demoted Jacoby Brissett and led the comeback. He is QB1 now, and he faces a tougher test this week: a Seattle defence allowing just 19.9 ppg. The two sides already met in Week 2, when the Seahawks rolled to a 31-7 win in Arizona's and their issues on defence have only grown since.

I'm backing Seattle to cover this big spread at home. Arizona is allowing 29.8 ppg, which is the worst mark in the league, against a Seattle offence averaging 23.1 ppg. Gardner Minshew takes over at quarterback after rescuing last week's game in Dallas, and I think the market is leaning too hard on that one overtime finish rather than on a defence that has been poor all season. Seattle beat the Cardinals team 31-7 in the desert and in their house will beat them badly again.

The Seattle side

Sam Darnold has quietly stabilized Seattle's offence, and the Seahawks are averaging 23.1 ppg while allowing just 19.9. While they have three of their last four games the three losses were facing very good teams and the one win was handing the Chiefs their first loss of the season. In their last game their defence struggled in a 34-17 loss to the Chicago Bears. Arizona has a different problem: a defence that has given up 29.8 ppg all season, worst in the NFL and the Seahawks should feast on that like they did in Week 2. 

The Arizona side

Gardner Minshew's first assignment as Arizona's new starter comes on the road against the team that beat his team 31-7 back in Week 2. He played well enough in relief to beat Dallas 33-30 in overtime, and Trey McBride remains one of the league's most productive tight ends regardless of who is throwing him the ball. Arizona's defence is the main issue, conceding 30 or more points in six of its eight games this season and their offence only put up seven points in the early season loss to Seattle.

Seattle's -714 moneyline at Bet365 implies an 87.7% chance of a win before the vig; once I remove it, that settles at 84% for Seattle against 16% for Arizona. My own number is closer to 78% and 22%. Seattle has lost three of its last four games, and I want more consistency from this offence before trusting odds this lopsided. Still, the gap between these two defences is huge, and that's the bigger reason I expect Seattle's to show up big. The Seahawks throttled the Cardinals early on this season and they will win and cover again on Sunday.

I'm calling this one 30-16. Arizona's run defence has been gouged all year, and Seattle's ground game behind Emmanuel Wilson should control enough of the clock to keep Minshew off the field for long stretches. That 14-point margin clears the 12.5 spread, and a 46-point total clears the 41.5 line, so I like the Over here alongside the home side to cover.
