San Francisco 49ers vs Las Vegas Raiders Best Odds

San Francisco returns from its bye at 6-1, allowing just 19.9 ppg, the sixth best scoring defence in the league. Las Vegas climbs back to 4-4 with a win in their last game snapping their four-game skid, but a defence giving up 28.8 ppg is still their  problem, and that gap is what drives this week's NFL prediction odds more than anything else on the board.

San Francisco 49ers vs Las Vegas Raiders Best Bet

San Francisco 49ers -9.5: -115

I'm backing San Francisco to win and cover the 9.5 points. Brock Purdy leads an offence averaging 28.1 ppg, and Christian McCaffrey has scored a touchdown in six of San Francisco's seven games this season, eight combined touchdowns in that span. Las Vegas' four wins have come against a combined 5-24 record between Miami, the Chargers, New Orleans and the Jets, a far softer slate than the 49ers have played. San Francisco has scored 20 or more points in every game this season, and I think the market still undervalues just how often that Raiders defence let teams like this one score big.

San Francisco 49ers vs Las Vegas Raiders Analysis

The San Francisco side

San Francisco's defence is the separator, the main reason Las Vegas is such a wide underdog here. The only loss this season came two weeks ago, a 29-20 road defeat at Atlanta, and the week off since should leave the group fresh. The 49ers are balanced on both sides of the ball and are rested off the bye, which is not good for the visiting team.

The Las Vegas side

Kirk Cousins has been the best version of himself lately, throwing for 855 yards and seven touchdowns against just one interception over his last three starts, including three scores in last week's 38-33 win over the Jets. Cousins has had to do it all, as the Raiders ranks second-to-last in the NFL in rushing yards per game. Las Vegas has given up a total of 68 points in the last two games and facing a legit offence coming off a bye does not bode well.

San Francisco 49ers vs Las Vegas Raiders Prediction

The market has San Francisco as roughly an 80% favourite on the moneyline once the vig is removed, and I don't think that's far off. My own number lands close to that, around 78%, since the gap between an elite San Francisco defence and one of the league's most generous explains the difference. Where I do see value is in the margin rather than the winner: Las Vegas' defence has allowed 30 or more points in each of its last four games, and I don't expect Sunday to be any different.

My Exact Score Prediction: San Francisco 49ers 34 Las Vegas Raiders 20

I'm calling this one 34-20. San Francisco is a perfect 4-0 at Levi's Stadium this season, and its six wins have come by an average of more than 11 points. Las Vegas gets enough through Cousins' arm to stay within range early, but not enough to keep pace once San Francisco pulls away in the second half. That combined 54 sits over Bet365's 52.5 total and clears the 9.5 spread as well.
