There has been a lot of talk about how healthy Christian McCaffrey truly is ahead of this Week 1 matchup, as he’s been dealing with a calf issue over the last few weeks. Calves are nothing to mess around with, but CMC said several weeks ago that if they had a regular season game that day, he would have played. His absence from practice and preseason is likely precautionary.
With CMC at or very close to 100 percent, he should get close to a full complement of snaps, especially considering this is likely to be a close and competitive matchup. And a regular workload for CMC in this 49ers offense generally means he’s making a trip to pay dirt.
During his 26 regular season games with the 49ers, McCaffrey has scored at least one TD in 21 of them, and he’s scored in each of his six playoff appearances with the team as well, for what that’s worth. CMC actually put up a 17-game TD streak across the end of the 2022 season and the start of the 2023 campaign, which is the longest such streak in NFL history. If anyone is a lock to score every week, it’s CMC, and as long as his anytime TD NFL betting odds are lower than -200, as they are here, it’s worth the chalk.
Across the way, we have a bit more of a curveball pick. The Jets are a bit of an enigma since we haven’t seen Aaron Rodgers operate with these guys yet, but we expect him to have success, especially playing against his favorite childhood team as a Chico, California native.
While Garrett Wilson is likely to see a lot of targets, he has a tough matchup with All-Pro cornerback Charvarius Ward. Mike Williams, the big play, jump ball threat formerly of the Chargers, has a much juicier matchup with Isaac Yiadom, a journeyman with just 28 starts in six seasons.
Apart from Ward, a lot of the 49ers secondary is in trouble, with inexperienced safety Ji’Ayir Brown starting next to backup George Odum, who will likely stand in for Talanoa Hufanga, who is still recovering from his ACL injury. Rodgers will be able to throw on this secondary, and we think Williams is offering the best value here.
Best Bets
- Christian McCaffrey Anytime TD Scorer (-175)
- Mike Williams Anytime TD Scorer (+225)
Aaron Rodgers, QB (NYJ) - Over 235.5 Passing Yards (-110)
Aaron Rodgers hasn’t played a proper game of football since 2022, so you can bet that he’s going to be chomping at the bit to get out there and prove he can still sling it with the best of them. He averaged more than 235 yards passing in all but one of his starting seasons for the Packers (2022), and he’s going to be aggressive here in his first game back.
Mike Williams, WR (NYJ) - Over 30.5 Receiving Yards (+100)
As we mentioned before, Williams has a plus matchup here, and sports betting sites are over-indexing his injury last year. Williams has been practicing fully, so if he plays a full slate of snaps, this will be an easy hit for the over, not to mention the plus odds.
Nick Bosa, Edge (SF) - To Record A Sack (+140)
The New York Jets improved their offensive line immensely this offseason, but most of their starters will be playing in a competitive game together for the first time, and that kind of situation lends itself to mistakes and miscommunication, which Nick Bosa can take advantage of. The All-Pro had at least a half sack in nine of his final 14 regular season games last year.
Deebo Samuel, WR (SF) - Longest Reception Over 19.5 Yards (-120)
Deebo Samuel hasn’t been the weapon he once was in 2021 over the last couple of years, but he’s still a big play threat every time he steps out there. Since 2022, he’s had 22 receptions of 20+ yards in 28 games. In his career, he’s got 70 in just 58 starts. Count on him breaking a tackle and getting at least one chunk play against the Jets.
