West Ham vs. Aston Villa - Premier League Soccer Betting Odds

With all of the cups, both domestic and continental, coming to a head over the past few and upcoming few weeks, the Premier League has seen a half-dozen fixtures postponed for the upcoming Matchday 29. However, there is still one matchup pitting top seven opponents against one another as Aston Villa heads to London Stadium to take on West Ham on Sunday afternoon. In a matchup of the current fourth-place and seventh-place clubs in the EPL, fourth-place Villa are the predictable moneyline favorites on most betting sites and betting apps - though by a smaller margin than many might have thought.

Highlights

  • West Ham’s decade of dominance over Villa has come to an end
  • Villa will bounce back from a big loss with a win, but both teams will score
  • Jarrod Bowen and Ollie Watkins both scored in the last meeting

West Ham vs. Aston Villa Premier League Soccer Betting Odds - March 17

West Ham comes into this matchup having picked up seven points over the last three outings, which allowed them to surge into the top half of the table. The Hammers are coming off of a draw to Burnley, who are likely to be relegated, but they’ll take heart in the performance, which saw them claw back from down 2-0. Aston Villa, meanwhile, has won three of their last four, though their most recent EPL fixture was a 4-0 drubbing where Spurs scored all four of their goals in the second half. West Ham started the season strong coming off of their first ever European trophy in the 2023 Europa Conference League. They lost just two of their first eight matches before Aston Villa beat them 4-1, the first of three straight losses for the Hammers.

More recently, West Ham failed to win in six straight Premier League games before embarking on their latest run of good form, beating Brentford and Everton and drawing to Burnley in succession.

Aston Villa, meanwhile, has been having a dream season, as they’ve spent most of the campaign in the top four, even reaching the top of the table early on. Villa have been on fire of late, losing only five of their last 25 matches in all competitions, dating back to early November.

These two teams have played 119 times in their long and storied histories, with West Ham claiming a 45-39 advantage in wins, with 35 draws as well. Villa won this fixture soundly at Villa Park back in October, beating up on the Hammers in that 4-1 victory. However, prior to that, Villa had failed to win against West Ham for 10 straight matchups dating back to 2015.

West Ham did the double on Villa in 2015-2016, 2019-2020, 2020-2021, 2021-2022, and took four points from Villa last season. Clearly, West Ham manager David Moyes knows how to play against Villa—though Moyes drew and lost in the two matchups since Unai Emery took over as Villa manager in October 2022.

West Ham are at home, and Villa haven’t won at West Ham since 2011, a span during which they lost four and drew four. However, Villa have not just been excellent this season, they’ve been excellent on the road, winning seven away games so far this season, good for a tie for fourth in the EPL.

Meanwhile, West Ham have actually been better on the road than they’ve been at London Stadium, picking up the same amount of wins (6) at home as they have away. West Ham have also allowed 21 goals at home, third-most among sides not in the relegation zone. At the same time, Villa’s 24 away goals represent the third-largest total apart from the top three.

Villa seems like the easy pick to win this one at +145 odds on the moneyline considering the recent history of these two managers and clubs combined with each side’s home/away records. Not to mention that Emery will likely have his squad revving their engines to bounce back from that awful 4-0 defeat to Tottenham last time out.

In terms of goals, Villa has allowed each of the last six Premier League teams they’ve faced to score, and West Ham hasn’t kept an opponent off the score sheet since January 2, so the over on this match’s 2.5 goal total seems like a safe bet at -182, as does the BTTS prop, which sits at less enticing -204 odds. You could also go over 3.5 goals, which is offering much nicer +130 odds.

Obviously, when you’re talking about anytime goal scorers for a Villa game, the first name mentioned has to be Ollie Watkins, who’s been scoring left and right this season to the tune of 16 Premier League goals, second only to Erling Haaland. Watkins actually had a goal and an assist in this fixture back in October, so he can beat this West Ham back line.

He also scored at London Stadium last season in a 1-1 draw, not to mention his overall recent form: in the seven games prior to the team’s 4-0 loss to Spurs, Watkins had netted seven goals. He’s a solid, if unexciting bet to score here at +140.

When Villa beat West Ham 4-1 earlier this season, Jarrod Bowen was the only player to score for West Ham. He’s scored about a third of the Hammers’ PL goals in 2023-2024, and he’s coming off a goal-scoring performance in the Europa League in mid-week. Again, his odds aren’t great, but at +125, you’re still getting decent value. Plus, there’s no other reliable goal scorer on the team apart from Bowen at the moment.
